The box office duo have contested a number of memorable matches in recent years and are set to renew their competitive rivalry for the first time this year.

The last four meetings between the two have all come in televised finals, with Trump coming out on top on the two most recent occasions - the 2015 World Grand Prix and the 2016 European Masters.

O'Sullivan opened his account for the season by landing a record seventh Masters title in January, but has not threatened further silverware since, suffering early exits in the German Masters, World Grand Prix and Welsh Open.

The five-time World Champion, though, looked in ominous form as he swept aside Liang Wenbo 5-1 on Monday with a pair of century breaks to his name.

Crowd favourite O'Sullivan is appearing at this stage of the Players Championship for the first time and will be out to justify his position as the front-runner for the title by ending the hopes of his attacking rival.

Trump is aiming to remain on course for a third consecutive ranking final appearance, having finished runner-up in both the recent Welsh Open and Gibraltar Open.

The world number three produced an imperious display to defeat Mark King 5-2 in the opening round, which included a tournament high break of 132, and will be keen to pick up from where he left off.

Trump has admitted he thrives off his battles with O'Sullivan as he seeks inspiration from 'The Rocket' - and that certainly proved the case when he produced a trio of centuries in a thrilling 9-8 win claim to the European Masters crown last October.

O'Sullivan's last televised triumph over 'The Ace' came in the 2014 UK Championship final, though he has the marginally better overall record with eight wins from their 15 encounters in total.

Their latest show-down gets underway from 7pm GMT and will be contested over the best of nine frames at Venue Cymru in Llandudno.

Either 2010 World Champion Neil Robertson, two-time world finalist Ali Carter or Gibraltar Open winner Shaun Murphy awaits the winner in the Semi-Finals.
