O'Sullivan battled back from the brink to edge out Liang Wenbo in his first competitive appearance of the season on Tuesday, reeling off four consecutive frames from 4-1 down to ensure he lives to fight another day.

The Rocket is bidding to become the only player to have lifted this trophy on more than one occasion, having initially done so back in 2009, but faces a tough test against an opponent who will hold no fear heading into the clash.

Holt recorded a 4-3 victory in their last televised meeting at the World Grand Prix in March and will be eyeing a similarly-strong scoring display in their latest head-to-head.

The Nottingham ace announced himself into the competition by ending the reign of defending champion Kyren Wilson with a 5-2 victory in Round One and has enjoyed a fine start to the season, notably reaching the final of the Riga Masters in June.

While O'Sullivan is the less match sharp of the two given his lack of competitive practice in recent months, he has the ability to turn on the style at any given moment, which he underlined in his opening salvo earlier this week.

The five-time World Champion, though, can ill-afford another sluggish start against one of snooker's most aggressive performers, who is unlikely to turn down any break-building opportunities that come his way.

O'Sullivan has won seven of their previous nine meetings in total dating back to 2002, with this set to be their first encounter on Chinese soil and certainly one to savour.

The match gets underway from 12.30pm BST and will be contested over the best of nine frames at the Shanghai Grand Stage. Either home favourite Ding Junhui or 2014 runner-up Mark Allen will await the winner in Friday's Quarter-Finals.
