The Rocket launched his quest for a record-breaking fifth title in Wales with a commanding 4-1 victory over Paul Hunter Classic finalist Tom Ford in the opening round.

Despite losing the opening frame to the man from Leicester, O’Sullivan made breaks of 53 and 101 as he reeled off the next four to secure a comfortable win.

Following the surprise first-round exit of fellow four-time winner John Higgins on Monday, the 41-year-old now has a clear run in his quest to become the tournament’s most successful player outright.

He will be fairly confident going into the second round having won each of his last five meetings with Davis, including their most recent clash in the quarter-finals of the European Masters in October.

In fact, you have to go back nearly 16 years to the 2001 Scottish Open for the Hastings cueist’s sole success over the Rocket in tournament play.

Not only that, but Davis has a very modest record in Wales, where he has never been beyond the Last 32 in any of his 25 previous appearances here.

The world number 31 will be eager to finally put an end to that unwanted record this time around, and began his bid to do so in a fairly solid manner with runs of 77 and 51 helping him to a 4-2 success over Li Hang in the opening round on Monday.

He has produced some good snooker so far this season having reached the quarter-finals of three separate ranking events, including the Paul Hunter Classic and Scottish Open, and is hoping to hit another good spell of form in the Welsh capital.

The match gets underway at 7pm GMT on Wednesday and will be contested over the best of seven frames at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff.

Ireland's Fergal O'Brien awaits the winner in the Third Round on Thursday.
