Our top 10 progressive jackpot slots

Whilst we love every kind of online casino game, there’s only one way you’re ever going to win a life-changing sum of money playing online, and that’s on a progressive jackpot slot.

These games are fed by networks of casinos all creaming off cash from wagers to constantly increase a huge pot of cash, which is paid out when a jackpot is scored, or paid out at random via an off-screen, separate game – usually formatted in a wheel-of-fortune style.

There are dozens of progressive games on offer – particularly from Microgaming casinos – but many of them have 5-figure jackpots. The more prominent, though, can pay you millions, so if you‘re looking to join the jet set for the rest of your life, here are the game to make a beeline for:

1. Mega Moolah slots

Most of Microgaming’s progressive slots have a retro feel to them, but this one look s very contemporary despite having been around for quite some time. It’s the most famous millionaire-maker of them all, with a record payout of €6.3 million and several other 7-figure wins to its credit.

A number of other games are tied into its progressive pot, and the progressive prize is awarded semi-randomly: There’s no specific set of symbols need to trigger it, but if you wager more than it’s more likely to come your way. Invoke the jackpot and you’re taken to a wheel of fortune with four levels of jackpot. Needless to say, the bigger amounts have less segments, but once you reach the wheel you’re guaranteed something pretty large.

2. Major Millions slots

This is Microgaming’s other big progressive draw, and it’s a classically-styled game with the appearance of a pub fruit slot - until you realise how much can be won. It comes in 3 and 5 reel form, and can even be played on your mobile. Should the jackpot be taken down by a lucky player, it still has a rest value of $250,000 so whenever you score a big progressive win on this slot you can bet on one thing: It’ll be huge.

3. Beach Life slots

Playtech are not known for offering dozens of progressive slots – but the ones they do have are notoriously good. Beach Life is a strange affair. Themed, as you’d expect, around a sunny trip to the coast, you’ll find dolphins, sunglasses, ice creams, lollies, buckets and spades on the reelface, giving the overall impression of a lightweight kind of game – but don’t be fooled: It’s paid out over $7 million before now, and continues to attract a vast amount of attention.

4. Gold Rally

Playtech’s other big progressive draw, Gold Rally has a smaller jackpot but has still paid out over $6 million in its time. Unlike other progressive slots, though, it has a unique, 3 by 3 grid structure with 8 win lines going up, across and diagonally over the screen. Progressive games are not known for being particularly in terms of game structure, so Gold Rally really is a breath of fresh air.

5. Gladiator slots

This game is based on the smash hit 2000 movie starring Russell Crowe, and was originally launched on a non-progressive format. However, the basic slot – featuring original scenes, characters and music from the film – was so popular that a progressive version was launched, and it’s doing recor levels of business across Playtech’s huge range of casinos.

6. Marvel Slots

Playtech’s other great contribution to the world of progressive jackpots comes from its 4-way Marvel Mystery Jackpot: This is triggered in the same semi-random fashion as Mega Moolah – make more wagers and your luck will improve – and it also has four different sizes of jackpot, though which one you get is determined via a turning card game instead of a wheel.

All of the Marvel games feed into this pot, so the total funds available rise rapidly. Ironically, most players are attracted to the Marvel games because of their other headline jackpots, which are also generally pretty huge – so if you play these games the progressive prize is not the only big draw.

7. Mega Fortune

This is Net Entertainment’s headline contribution to the progressive genre, and it’s a mighty fine one. Being a newer game in relation to the other progressive games, the theming is more up to date, and if we had to describe it on one word, that word would be Bling.

This game is a jewel-encrusted, aspirational, testament to conspicuous consumption and we wouldn’t want it any other way. You’ll be confronted with fancy cars, speedboats and other trophy reminders of how good it is to be rich, but win big here and those kinds of consumables will be well within your reach:  €11.7m was won on this game at Betsson Casino in 2011 – a Guinness World Record, and the triple-layered wheel of fortune that leads to wins of this size is the most exciting of its kind.

8. Hall of Gods slots

Net Entertainment have a second tier of progressive games as well as Mega Fortune, and Hall of Gods is the most prominent of them all, after recently paying out a €6.4 million prize. Although there are almost as many Norse warrior-themed slots on the market as there are 1,000 metre-plus mountain peaks in the Fjords, none of them can come close to offering a prize of that magnitude.

9. Divine Fortune slots

While the main progressive jackpot spotlight usually falls on Mega Fortune slots, Divine Fortune is a worthy mention and a text book example of an ancient Greek themed slot. Expanding wilds, free spins and 3 massive jackpots to play for - a real jackpot treat.

10. MegaJackpot Slots

IGT’s progressive pot is shared among a number of games, all of which have a standalone version and a Megajackpots version – and it’s the Megajackpots games you’ll need to play if you want to win a progressive prize. In fact, a number of IGT games have Megajackpots versions, notably Monopoly and Cluedo – so you’re bound to find something that suits you.

The Megajackpots system has created more than 1,000 millionaires and paid out over $3.8billion in jackpot prizes since its inception – so it’s well worth giving them a try.

These are just some of the biggest progressive slots around, but there are plenty of others – especially at Microgaming casinos like Ladbrokes, All Slots and Jackpot City that will offer you lower profile games – which you’ll stand a correspondingly higher chance of winning.
