Considering we’re backing New South Wales for the upset on enemy territory, it’s only right that we also go with a Blues player to score the opening try of the match.

Traditionally, NSW don’t score many points under Laurie Daley, and with the close nature of Origin contests in mind, I don’t expect many tries to be scored at Suncorp.

Which means that impact players are in with the most likely chance of crossing the stripe. I’m liking Jarryd Hayne at centre for this clash (14/1 William Hill).

Yes, Hayne has only recently moved into the centre role, but give the man space in any position on the field and he has the ability to break the line.

Hayne is a genuine game-changer (something the Blues have lacked over the years), and his mere presence in the backline will intimidate the Queenslanders. Be it a long-range effort or a show of strength close to the line, Hayne is among the leading contenders to bag a four-pointer.

There’s a couple of value options in the forwards as well.

New Blues captain Boyd Cordner has history in scoring the first try in Origin - and it’s shown in the market, with the Roosters star listed at $19.

Which is why I’m liking the look of Andrew Fifita at $41. Fifita can prove almost unstoppable close to the line, and we often see forwards barge over from close proximity in Origin. Fifita has the power and underrated footwork close to the line to bag himself a try.
