St Helens vs Sydney Roosters World Club Series betting tips - Roosters to pile on the points against Saints

  • St Helens host Sydney Roosters at 2000 GMT on Friday
  • First game in the 2016 World Club Series
  • Roosters beat Saints 38-0 back in 2003

St Helens entertain Sydney Roosters in the opening game of the 2016 World Club Series on Friday looking to gain a measure of revenge from their last meeting in 2003.

World Club Series Match Odds: (Betfred) St Helens 2/1, Draw 22/1, Sydney Roosters 2/5

The 2016 World Club Series sees three teams from Super League do battle with three from the NRL, the opening games sees St Helens take on Sydney Roosters while the Super League and NRL Grand Final runners-up, Wigan Warriors and Brisbane Broncos, lock horns on Saturday.

The series comes to a close on Sunday evening with Super League champions Leeds Rhinos playing host to NRL Grand Final winners North Queensland Cowboys in the World Club Challenge.

St Helens and Sydney Roosters have a little bit of history in this competition, back in 1976 the Roosters, who were then the Eastern Suburbs, beat the Saints 25-2 in the first ever Australia versus England club match – this was one not classed as an official World Club Challenge match.

They then locked horns in an official capacity in 2003 with the Roosters showing no mercy as they ran out 38-0 at the Reebok Stadium in Bolton with the now retired Adrian Morley crossing over for one of five Roosters tries.

The Roosters have won the World Club Challenge just once since that win over Saints, they defeated the Wigan Warriors 36-14 in Sydney in 2014, while St Helens won their second and final title in 2007 when they beat Brisbane Broncos 18-14.

Last season St Helens were embarrassed 39-0 in the World Club Challenge match against South Sydney Rabbitohs, and although the trophy is not on the line this time they will be hoping to perform a little bit better against the Australians.

The Super League season has already started with Saints winning their first game 30-16 against Huddersfield Giants, but they come into this clash on the back of a disappointing 44-10 loss away at the Salford Red Devils.

The NRL season has not started yet and although the Roosters will come into this game quite cold, they should still have enough to beat St Helen, especially with the likes of Joe Burgess, Jared Waera-Hargreaves, Dylan Napa and Aiden Guerra in their ranks.

The Saints should have learned from the mistakes they made against the Bunnies last year, but they will still not be good enough to beat the Roosters. Back the Sydney outfit to record a 13 points plus win at 11/10 with Paddy Power.

St Helens versus Sydney Roosters takes place at Langtree Park on Friday, February 19 with a kick-off time of 2000 GMT. This game will be screened live on Sky Sports.
