New Zealand can all but wrap up their spot in the Four Nations final when they take on minnows Scotland in the final group game for the two sides on Friday night.

Both sides head into this encounter on the back of last-start losses, with New Zealand falling 14-8 to Australia and Scotland going down 38-12 to fierce rivals England.

Courtesy of their opening group win over hosts England, the Kiwis can virtually guarantee their place in the 2016 Four Nations final if they can ease past Scotland on Friday night.

New Zealand are always a more formidable outfit in tournament settings, and although they lost to the Kangaroos for the third time in 2016 last week, it was a much improved performance and they were looking dangerous towards the end of the game. If they do go on to meet Australia in the final, they could certainly pull off another Four Nations upset over their traditional rivals.

However they need to ensure their spot in the tournament decider first - and that means moving past the challenge of Scotland with minimal fuss.

New Zealand coach David Kidwell has named four debutants for the clash, including David Fusitu’a, Te Maire Martin, James Fisher-Harris and Joseph Tapine.

"The most important thing right now is we need to win. Scotland started really well against England and we need to respect that,” Kidwell said ahead of the game.
"They have improved every game and if you add that on top of the conditions, we have a tough challenge ahead."
"The guys making their debuts deserve the opportunity to play. They have worked extremely hard and have been pushing for spots all tour."

Scotland have been impressive at stages during their Four Nations debut, and while they were humbled by Australia, the Bravehearts gave England an almighty scare before eventually fading.

Scotland scored the opening two tries of the match and were well in with a shot until midway through the second half when England showed their class and ultimately ran away with the match.

With Lachlan Coote and Danny Brough combining nicely as playmakers in opposition territory, along with NRL centres Kane Linnett and Euan Aitken, Scotland do possess some firepower and strike-men capable of penetrating the sometimes-suspect Kiwi defence.

But the biggest challenge for Scotland will be consistently containing the enormous New Zealand forward pack, with the Kiwis a chance to cause a boilover if they gain the initial ascendancy.

Prediction:

New Zealand will win this game. But Scotland haven’t been outright Four Nations easy-beats and have covered the line in each of their first two games. With the Kiwis at unbackable odds, your best bet here is to back Scotland to exceed market expectations once again.
