England v Papua New Guinea Preview and Tips

Still regarded as the biggest challenge to knocking off defending champions Australia for the World Cup title, England face an intriguing test in the form of Papua New Guinea on Saturday afternoon in Melbourne.

England have been solid all tournament without being spectacular, but their performance in the first half of their 36-6 win over France was certainly the best they’ve looked all tournament. If they can produce an 80-minute display of that ilk, then England will be a big danger in the closing stages of this competition.

Sam Burgess also returns in a huge boost for England, while Gareth Widdop will again line up at fullback after a sparking performance in the No. 1 jersey against France.

Papua New Guinea went through the group stage unbeaten, but they did have the luxury of playing all their games at home in Port Moresby.

PNG now have to make the trip down to Melbourne to play arguably the second-best team in the competition. It’s going to be a massive step up in class and the Kumuls will do well to keep it close.

England are rolling along nicely at the moment, and this clash with PNG should set them up nicely for what could be a blockbuster semi-final against an in-form Tongan side. England to win comfortably.
