Hosts England get their 2016 Four Nations campaign underway when the take on defending champions New Zealand on Saturday.

England come into this encounter on the back of a dominant 40-6 victory over France last week, while New Zealand never threatened in a 20-6 loss to Australia earlier this month in Perth.

England begin their quest for a first ever Four Nations title when they host defending champions New Zealand in Huddersfield on Saturday afternoon.

It’s a crucial match for both, with many labelling the clash as a virtual grand final qualifier. Australia are tipped to win all their group games and reach the final, while Scotland will likely fail to win a match, meaning the winner of this game will be in pole position to play for the title.

With Wayne Bennett at the helm, much is expected of England this Four Nations, especially at home. The Poms are equipped with firepower all over the paddock and have a superb blend of power, speed, youth and experience.

NRL superstars Sam Burgess, George Burgess, James Graham and Josh Hodgson will all be a part of England’s fearsome forward pack, with Dragons playmaker Gareth Widdop calling the shots in the halves.

Super League stars John Bateman, Liam Farrell and Chris Hill are all excellent players, while the hulking Ryan Hall has scored 28 tries from as many matches on the flanks.

Meanwhile, rookie Kiwis boss David Kidwell has a lot of work to do after his New Zealand outfit were outclassed by Australia earlier this month.

It’s true that New Zealand always operate much better in a tournament format, but they need guidance and structure, and at the moment, they look lost and devoid of ideas.

But, at the same time, New Zealand are capable of going on rampaging runs at a moment’s notice, and England should be prepared for a torrid initial onslaught on Saturday.

New Zealand’s forward pack can certainly match England’s, and if Shaun Johnson is fit and firing, he is potentially that individual match-winner that the Poms may lack.

Prediction:

Expect this clash to go down to the wire, with New Zealand winning their last two meetings by two points. However I’m backing England to get the job done this time around. The Poms have an outstanding team and the most successful rugby league coach in history. Playing at home and coupled with New Zealand’s questionable current form, they should be able to edge this one.
