England are tasked with a must-win clash with Australia if they are to have any chance of progressing to the Four Nations final when they two teams collide on Sunday.

Both teams come into this contest on the back of last-start victories, with Australia taking down old rivals New Zealand 14-8 and England coming from behind to move past Scotland 38-12.

A place in the 2016 Four Nations final is on the line when England host Australia in the final group game at the Olympic Stadium on Sunday.

England for the most part have been disappointing so far, with a whole lot of expectation surrounding the side pre-tournament courtesy of Wayne Bennett and the fact they are playing on home soil.

But England haven’t lived up to those expectations, falling to New Zealand in their Four Nations opener before leaking two unanswered tries against Scotland in the first 30 minutes. Elliott Whitehead turned the game on its head with two tries before half-time, but the Poms weren’t impressive and they will need significant improvement when they face the Kangaroos.

Still, on the flip side, Wayne Bennett has been preparing for this moment since the day he accepted the England coaching role. Bennett has unlimited knowledge on the Australian players - especially fullback Darius Boyd - and knows their strengths and weaknesses inside out. In the middle of a rumoured feud with Mal Meninga, Bennett would love nothing more than getting one over the Australians.

England will likely need to win by a decent margin against Australia to have a chance of making the final, considering New Zealand will likely post a big score against Scotland.

A win by any margin will ensure Australia a spot in the final next week. The Kangaroos haven’t been at their best, but they’ve done what’s been needed in victories over Scotland and New Zealand in their first two games.

Australia exploded out of the blocks against the Kiwis last week to lead 10-0 inside 15 minutes, but they struggled to make an impact after that initial onslaught, and in the end they did very well to hold on for the win.

Cooper Cronk was rested last week but will return to action for this encounter, while Johnathan Thurston should be fit to partner him in the halves despite picking up a knock towards the end of the New Zealand win. Sam Thaiday is in doubt with a knee issue.

Prediction:

Bennett and England will be fired up for this one, but given what we’ve seen from both sides, it most likely won’t be enough. Australia can match England all over the park, while they have extra class in the halves that should prove the difference. England will keep it close, but expect the Kangaroos to continue their unbeaten Four Nations run into the final.
