Australia's Wallabies get their shortened 2019 Rugby Championship campaign underway with a trip to face South Africa at Ellis Park in Johannesburg.

There will only be three games this campaign due to the Rugby World Cup and a defeat in this opener will all but rule out one side from lifting the championship.

Match Preview

Usually the crown jewel of the rugby calendar, the Rugby Championship finds itself knocked down a peg with all eyes to the World Cup later this year.

Instead, the shortened competition serves as the final proving ground for sides to prepare for the big dance in Japan and both the Springboks and Wallabies will be looking for an opening day win.

The Springboks had something of a resurgence in 2018, though ultimately still managed to win only half of their games despite some encouraging signs. Of course, that record also included a win against the All Blacks in New Zealand.

Australia had a disastrous 2018, losing nine games while winning just four. Super Rugby 2019 treated Australia not much better, with just one team making the playoffs, while South Africa had two qualifiers.

The two sides split their tournament series last year, each taking a win at home. The Springboks get the benefit of kicking off their campaign at home in 2019, where they are always an intimidating force, so much so that the Wallabies have not won in the Republic since 2010.

In an effort to give multiple players opportunities for the bigger picture, the Springboks have named something of a secondary lineup, with one eye to the more ominous All Blacks force looming in wait.

But in a World Cup year, these names who may be on the fringe right now have everything to play for, and the home ground advantage for South Africa is so immense.
