Can Ireland get their World Cup preparations back on track following their dismal Six Nations, or will Italy spring a huge surprise on their hosts? Read on for our best bet for this match.

Ireland vs Italy Predictions

2019 has not been the year the Irish team and its fans would have been hoping for so far with the men in green left to rue what might have been. The Grand Slam they clinched following a perfect campaign in the 2018 Six Nations was immediately wrestled from their grasp as they lost to England in Dublin in their opening game with Wales going on to lift the crown with a win over the Irish in Cardiff on the final game day. The 2019 Six Nations was meant to be the side’s chance to really nail their preparations for the World Cup in the latter stages of the year but they have instead been left to lick their wounds and start again, with the side rumbled on a number of occasions throughout the competition. Now, with mere weeks and only a handful of games between them and the start of the World Cup, Joe Schmidt and his men need to get things right, or they risk failing at the World Cup once again.

What can be said about Italian rugby? All-time great Sergio Parisse has laboured with the side for years and despite the fact he will surely go down as one of the game’s ultimate servants, even he has not been able to drag Italian rugby toward the upper-echelons of the game. Their 2019 Six Nations campaign made for ugly reading: five games played, no wins, no draws, five losses and no bonus points came along with just 79 points scored and 167 conceded, with Italy ending a massive nine points short of Scotland in fifth, with yet another wooden spoon added to their ever-growing collection. While some will cite this match as a chance for Italy to test out a few new ideas or players, we see it more as a game in which we will once again see how far away from the top they are.

Ireland vs Italy Betting Tips

The bookies are not being kind to Italy in this one with some making Ireland 1/200 favourites to win, while the Italians are available at 16’s with some bookies and it is easy to see why. Italy have not beaten Ireland since 2013 in a 22-15 win which saw Ireland respond with eight wins in their last eight encounters, while they have outscored their opponents 585-190 in their last 16 matches. In conjunction with this, Italy have not won a game since they beat Georgia 28-17 on November 18th of last year, losing seven games since then, while they have just two wins in their last 28 matches spanning back to the end of 2016. Ireland meanwhile will still be hurting from their poor Six Nations campaign, with a real need for form and results something we feel will drive them on to a big win. Bookmaker Paddy Power are currently offering 10/11 on Ireland -26 points, and we feel that this is the way to go, backing a big win for the Irish which is one we feel is very likely to come off against an Italian side that are limping into the World Cup once again.
