New Zealand's All Blacks begin the defence of their Rugby Championship title when they take on Argentina at Estadio José Amalfitani in Buenos Aires.

The All Blacks will begin World Cup preparations as the fight to make the final squad intensifies, and it is the Pumas who are first up in this year's shortened Rugby Championship.

Match Preview

After the Super Rugby final between the Crusaders and Jaguares, this contest may feel like we're on repeat as the Pumas, heavily comprised of Jaguares players, face off with a number of their Crusaders foes this time donning the black jersey.

That trip to the finals will no doubt be a huge boost for the Argentine players, following on from their gradual improvements in the Rugby Championship.

But with so many of their players in that side, and ultimately failing to beat the Crusaders, this sets a worrying precedent and potential lack of belief knowing that now they're about to face what is effectively the next level after the men in red and black.

While competition will be fierce for every country between players competing for spots at the World Cup, no country possesses the wealth of depth that the All Blacks have, and all of those players now know they're on trial for a World Cup position.

The All Blacks may have left a few big names from the touring party, the likes of Sam Whitelock, Kieran Read, Rieko Ioane, but much of the heavy artillery remains in players like Beauden Barrett, Ben Smith, Aaron Smith and Brodie Retallick. Five All Blacks will potentially make their debut in this game, accompanied by one test All Black Brad Weber.

Despite their improvements, it remains the case that Argentina have never beaten the All Blacks, and their Rugby Championship campaign in 2018 consisted of losses by 18 and 22 points.

One of the few flaws in the All Blacks is they can sometimes be guilty of starting their season slow, but with the fresh faces on board and World Cup spots up for grabs, their will be no time for that at an individual level, which will only power the machine further.
