New Zealand's rugby team to avenge their cricket team's World Cup final heartbreak?

New Zealand fell to an incredibly dramatic Cricket World Cup final loss to England at Lord's on Sunday, but the country will not have long to lick their wounds with attention quickly switching to the Rugby World Cup in Japan later in the year.

It was the most astonishing of finals on Sunday at Lord’s as the home of cricket played host to the greatest match in cricket history. England battled through to 241 all out in reply to New Zealand’s 241/8 after Ben Stokes dragged the side to a draw following his match-saving 84 not out to take proceedings to a super over. The tension could not have been higher as Stokes and Jos Buttler took to the field once again and the pair hit eight not out and seven not out respectively to set New Zealand a score of 16 to win after England outscored the Black Caps in boundary hitting meaning a draw would see the English crowned champions. In reply, James Neesham smashed 13 from five to give out of form Martin Guptill a chance to hit the winning runs from the final ball. However, Jason Roy fired his throw into Jos Buttler at the stumps as Guptill came back for the second and the wicketkeeper took the bails off with the batsman short of his ground to spark jubilant celebrations for England as they finally won the Cricket World Cup in the most dramatic of fashion.

New Zealand were left to lament what might have been as they twice drew with England on the scoreboard but still missed out as they suffered their second-straight Cricket World Cup final loss. Now though, the small nation will turn their attention to the Rugby World Cup where they are aiming for a third-straight tournament victory with the All Blacks the undisputed superpower in world rugby.

As thing stand, New Zealand are the favourites to win the competition at 11/10 with bookmaker Coral. England’s rugby team are 5/1 to match their cricketing team’s exploits and win their own World Cup, while Ireland (6/1), Wales (7/1) and South Africa (8/1) are also fancied to win the tournament. With the current strength of the northern hemisphere seeing three of the top four teams in the world rankings hailing from Europe, New Zealand will have to be at their best to win the competition, but this is something they are so used to doing, with outlasting the rest and standing above all others with the World Cup trophy held aloft something they have become the best at.

Coral - 2019 Rugby World Cup Winner betting odds (selected odds):

New Zealand - 11/10

England - 5/1

Ireland - 6/1

Wales - 7/1

South Africa - 8/1

Australia - 16/1

Scotland - 40/1
