Brian Healy gives his race-by-race tips and best bets for Tuesday's sole surviving meeting from Southwell.

Tuesday’s fixture list of horse racing action has been decimated by the bad recent weather which has swept across the UK, and the forces of nature has claimed both of Tuesday’s scheduled jumps racing cards at Ayr and Lingfield.

The loss of both jumps racing cards leaves only Southwell’s all-weather meeting to go to post, and a six-race fixture awaits punters on Tuesday.

Southwell (flat, aw) - 2.20 - 5.00pm (6 races)
Lingfield (jumps) - ABANDONED
Ayr (jumps) - ABANDONED

2:20 - Betway Apprentice Handicap Cl6 (4yo+ 0-65) 1m4f ATR
2:55 - Betway Stayers Handicap Cl5 (4yo+ 0-70) 2m2½f ATR
3:25 - Betway Handicap Cl3 (4yo+ 0-90) 2m½f ATR
4:00 - Handicap Cl5 (3yo+ 0-75) 7f ATR
4:30 - Betway Novice Stakes Cl5 (4yo+) 6f ATR
5:00 - Betway Sprint Handicap Cl6 (3yo+ 0-65) 5f ATR

With just one meeting taking place on Tuesday, Brian Healy goes through Southwell’s all-weather meeting where he has tips for all six races.

2:20 - Betway Apprentice Handicap Cl6 (4yo+ 0-65) 1m4f ATR

Star Ascending ought to go well in his hat-trick bid, but a 6lbs penalty for his latest win may leave him vulnerable and LEONARD THOMAS (6/1, William Hill) may be able to exact revenge for a narrow defeat behind that rival last time.

Rebecca Menzies’ Singspiel gelding finished off that race strongly when denied by a head by Jennie Candlish’s runner, and he did little wrong next time when finishing third over course and distance behind The Gay Cavalier where he again missed the break.

The drop back in trip at Newcastle probably didn’t suit, while he was guilty - along with others - of giving Outlaw Torn far too much rope when finishing fifth; he can’t be judged too harshly on that race, and back up in trip for this contest he could find some improvement for a first-time visor replacing cheekpieces.

2:55 - Betway Stayers Handicap Cl5 (4yo+ 0-70) 2m2½f ATR

ARGANTE (5/1, Paddy Power) has finished third on both outings this term on the all-weather - both at Chelmsford - either side of a disappointing run over hurdles at Fakenham.

Henry Spiller’s charge was beaten five lengths into third behind Noble Behest last time out, but that was a muddling contest which came in a higher grade; he had previously filled the same spot in third behind the reopposing Caged Lightning, beaten two lengths.

This extra quarter-mile could well see a reversal with the pair set to meet on the same terms once jockey claims are factored in; but Steve Gollings’ charge disappointed last time, and he needs to bounce back, but with an increased emphasis on stamina likely to suit the selection better, he gets the vote to come out on top.

Fran Berry can steer Argante to a Southwell win.

3:25 - Betway Handicap Cl3 (4yo+ 0-90) 2m½f ATR

COUER DE LION (7/4, Coral) is a very smart performer over hurdles, and Alan King’s Pour Moi gelding looks very well treated on his return to the flat, having won on turf at Nottingham last May and then going close at Newmarket in the Cesarewitch Trial where he found only Who Dares Wins too strong.

The King runner also made the frame in a competitive York handicap behind October Storm before reverting back to hurdles where he has locked horns with both London Prize and Old Guard in past runs.

Back on the flat, he is thorougly unexposed on the all-weather, and he turns out here on the same mark as when finishing just over two lengths’ third to October Storm at York on his last outing on the flat. A dual-winner was behind that day, and open to progress he looks the one to side with in this contest for his in-form yard.

4:00 - Handicap Cl5 (3yo+ 0-75) 7f ATR

ANGEL PALANAS (4/1, Ladbrokes) has looked a different animal since switching to six furlongs on this surface, and Karl Burke’s charge can land a hat-trick of wins stepping up further in trip

Beaten only a neck here at the beginning of January behind Tellovoi, the Mayson gelding has since posted back-to-back successes, running out an easy six lengths’ winner over Tagur and then beating Kommander Kirkup on his latest outing.

He made all the running in that latest start, where he had something to spare over the runner-up; he ought to be suited by a further step up in distance on that evidence, and he looks fairly weighted. Open to further improvement he can continue to progress, and no surprise to see him going close again.

Hollie Doyle can steer Alan King's Couer De Lion to victory at Southwell.

4:30 - Betway Novice Stakes Cl5 (4yo+) 6f ATR

VOLATILE (5/4, Paddy Power) stepped up on previous efforts when winning with something to spare at Chelmsford last month, making all, and Jamie Osborne’s charge could be hard to beat in his follow-up bid if handling this surface.

The Poet’s Voice gelding finished just over one length ahead of Reiffa, but he looked to win a shade comfortably and he could be hard to peg back around here with a repeat, although Light Laughter also likes to force the pace and won’t let the selection have it all his own way up front.

That one however has looked limited in his starts to date, and while he gets weight from Jamie Osborne’s charge he may have to settle for second best if the selection runs to a similar level as last time.

5:00 - Betway Sprint Handicap Cl6 (3yo+ 0-65) 5f ATR

ARCHIMEDES (3/1, William Hill) possibly failed to get home over six furlongs last time out at this venue, but the Invincible Spirit had struck the time previously over course and distance when beating Kingstreet Lady.

Derek Griffiths’ charge shaped better for his debut run in January which followed a wind operation and three month break when winning that contest, having looked in need of the run previously; he could do better back at this lesser distance, and Josephine Gordon is an eye-catching jockey booking on the five-year old.

The conditions of this race ought to suit him better, and he can go close.

2:20 - LEONARD THOMAS (6/1, William Hill)

2:55 - ARGANTE (5/1, Paddy Power)

3:25 - COUER DE LION (7/4, Coral) (NAP)

4:00 - ANGEL PALANAS (4/1, Ladbrokes)

4:30 - VOLATILE (5/4, Paddy Power

5:00 - ARCHIMEDES (3/1, William Hill) (NB)
