Royal Ascot tips 2016 - The best bet at this year's meeting

Tepin wins the Breeders' Cup Mile.

Queen Anne Stakes selection - TEPIN (4/1, Paddy Power)

Royal Ascot 2016 will have plenty of superstars on show over the course of the week, but the one that I am most looking forward to seeing is champion race mare Tepin in the Queen Anne Stakes.

Trained in America by Mark Casse, this mare has carried all before her in the last couple of seasons over there, with the highlight being her facile success in the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Keeneland last October. I don’t think that she got the necessary credit for that, as a lot of the runners were inconvenienced by a slow early gallop. The fact of the matter is that in her last 11 races she has nine wins, with her two defeats being by no more than a head.

She has a cruising speed that won’t be matched by any horse on this side of the water, and her stamina for the mile trip is beyond doubt, with victories at Group Two level at nine furlongs. Having reviewed videos of her runs this season in America, it seems like she has progressed again, cruising through quality races behind strong fractions, before easing her way to the front. Everything she does during a race appears so effortless, and I don’t think there is a horse in the Queen Anne Stakes with class like her.

The only concerns I could possibly have would be in relation to the travelling. Clearly it is a mammoth undertaking to ship a mare from Casse’s Kentucky base all the way to Ascot, and it is obviously an unknown as regards how she will handle it. Also Tepin has run with an equine nasal strip in her races on U.S. soil, but will not be allowed to wear it in Ascot, which would be a slight worry.

Reports have been positive so far though, and her final work before the shipping went to plan, so assuming no negative feedback comes from connections between here and the day of the race, I think she is worthy of banker status for the meeting.

The mile division in Europe looks a weak division in the absence of Solow, and her main rival appears to be Belardo, who won a sub-standard Lockinge last time out. The Europeans sent a strong challenge to the Breeders’ Cup last year and Tepin demolished them, and if she can run to her form at Ascot she will do the same here. The horse who finished second that day was Mondialiste, and he may well give her most to do again, and is an each way price at 25/1. That said, Tepin was well on top in Keeneland, and with worries about the travelling factored into her price, at 4/1 with Paddy Power she will do for me as the banker of the meeting.
