2017 York Dante meeting tips - Race-by-race selections for the third day of York's top-class fixture

Brian Healy 19 May 2017
York enters day three of its' Dante meeting on Friday.

Brian Healy gives his race-by-race selections for every race on the final day racecard of York's Dante meeting on Friday.

Friday plays host to the third and final day of the 2017 Dante meeting at York, and another top-class week on the Knavesmire closes out with the Group Two Yorkshire Cup as the day’s feature event.

Once again the ITV Racing team will be on hand to capture the best of the action, taking in four races live from York starting at 2.20pm amid its’ five-race Friday schedule.

2:20 - Langleys Solicitors British EBF Marygate Fillies' Stakes (Listed) Cl1 (2yo) 5f
2:55 - Longines Irish Champions Weekend Fillies' Stakes (Registered As The Michael Seely Memorial) (Listed) Cl1 (3yo) 7f192y
3:30 - Betway Yorkshire Cup (Group 2) (British Champions Series) Cl1 (4yo+) 1m5f188y
4:05 - Betway Jorvik Handicap Cl2 (4yo+) 1m3f188y
4:35 - Irish EBF Frank Whittle Partnership Fillies' Handicap Cl3 (4yo+) 7f
5:05 - Yorkshire Equine Practice Handicap Cl3 (3yo) 5f
5:40 - 7IM Supports Cystic Fibrosis Care Stakes (Handicap) Cl4 (3yo) 1m3f188y

And on the final day of horse racing action on the Knavesmire for the 2017 Dante festival, Brian Healy goes through the racecard where he has tips for every race.

2:20 - Langleys Solicitors British EBF Marygate Fillies' Stakes (Listed) Cl1 (2yo) 5f

Soft ground will come as a shock to most of these; but FORMIDABLE KITT (4/1, William Hill) made a strong impression when readily running out a winner of a Newmarket maiden last month on quicker ground, and Tom Dascombe’s Invincible Spirit filly could be the answer if handling these slower conditions.

Well-supported that day, she landed something of a gamble when coming home a half-length victor over Take Shelter, making all and then idling; but she found plenty when pressed and can only improve for the experience.

Open to plenty of progress with that run under her belt, she looked a potentially smart sort that day and is chanced to follow up here.

Tom Dascombe's Formidable Kitt can win the day three opener at York.

2:55 - Longines Irish Champions Weekend Fillies' Stakes (Registered As The Michael Seely Memorial) (Listed) Cl1 (3yo) 7f192y

William Haggas has a good record at this meeting, and ON HER TOES (4/1, Paddy Power) can give the Newmarket handler another winner.

The Kodiac filly will be making her seasonal return here, conceding race-fitness to some potentially smart and unexposed types; but she was progressive herself last term, landing a hat-trick of wins which included a soft ground maiden at Windsor, so she will have no issue with these conditions.

Having won a Listed race over this trip last July, she lost nothing in defeat when thrust into the Group Three Sweet Solera Stakes where she finished third behind Nations Alexander; that form sets the standard, and if she is fit to go on this reappearance run then she should go close with Ryan Moore an eye-catching booking for the Kodiac filly.

3:30 - Betway Yorkshire Cup (Group 2) (British Champions Series) Cl1 (4yo+) 1m5f188y

This is a strong renewal on paper, and Charlie Appleby’s ENDLESS TIME (6/1, Paddy Power) gets a narrow vote to come out on top in receipt of weight all round from this field of runners.

The Sea The Stars mare has been a prolific winner to date, winning back-to-back races in the summer of 2015, and then repeating the feat in the autumn of that year which included a Naas Listed contest where she was an impressive winner over Almela.

Having returned to action with a win at Haydock last July, she shaped as if amiss on her next start here behind Seventh Heaven in the Yorkshire Oaks; but she bounced back with a pair of runner-up finishes in French Group One contests, including behind Vazirabad in the Prix Royal Oak.

The Godolphin runner represents a yard in good form, and as a dual-winner on soft ground who has proven winning form when fresh, she boasts solid claims in this contest despite the strong level op opposition.

But in receipt of 4lbs and with plenty in her favour, she is taken to land this prize for her in-form yard.

4:05 - Betway Jorvik Handicap Cl2 (4yo+) 1m3f188y

SOUTHDOWN LAD (16/1, Sky Bet) won twice as a juvenile, scoring on debut at Ffos Las prior to a Newmarket success over Laafiraaq; and the Lilbourne Lad gelding progressed last term, where he twice finished third in runs at Newmarket and Newbury prior to resuming winning ways back at the latter venue following a break.

Disappointing on his final run at Goodwood, he returned to action at Kempton at the beginning of April where he probably needed the run behind Big Country; but he ought to strip much fitter now, and William Knight’s charge can post a big runn off the same mark.

All three of his wins have come on soft ground, but while he p has to find something on form with a couple of these, he remains a progressive sort who has improved for the switch to this distance, and he can go well in this contest where he holds definite place possibilities.

Southdown Lad can win Friday's final race of York's ITV Racing coverage.

4:35 - Irish EBF Frank Whittle Partnership Fillies' Handicap Cl3 (4yo+) 7f

It could be worth siding with HELLS BABE (9/2, Bet365) who is proven in soft ground and could still have some improvement to come given she remains a relatively lightly-raced sort.

A winner for Seamus Durack, the Hellvelyn filly was absent for almost a year during which time she moved to Jonjo O’Neill’s yard, although she was disappointing on both starts for that yard and has since moved again to Michael Appleby where she has had three runs.

She struck at the third attempt for her current handler, scoring at Doncaster in April when beating Florenza on quicker ground; but she may be happier back on a softer surface, and could be up to the task of coping with a 4lbs rise in the weights.

Ali Rawlinson’s claim offsets most of that rise however, and she can confirm the form with that reopposing rival here as well as Company Asset who finished third in the same race.

5:05 - Yorkshire Equine Practice Handicap Cl3 (3yo) 5f

JUSTANOTHERBOTTLE (11/2, Paddy Power) showed progressive form last term, getting off the mark at the fourth attempt when scoring at Redcar, and then going close to a follow up at Catterick when beaten just a neck behind Four Dragons.

Declan Carroll’s Intense Focus gelding made a winning return to action at Nottingham last month, stepping up on earlier form to impressively land a competitive handicap by four lengths from Scuzeme; that race has since threw up a couple of subsequent winners, and while the handicapper hasn’t missed him out with a 13lbs rise in the weights, he represents a yard in rude health and the manner of his last-time success suggests he could well be up to the task of progressing again to defy his new mark despite the tougher grade.

The booking of Ryan Moore catches the eye, and if handling these softer conditions it isn’t hard to see him going close.

Ryan Moore can get amongst the final day York winners.

5:40 - 7IM Supports Cystic Fibrosis Care Stakes (Handicap) Cl4 (3yo) 1m3f188y

DOMINATING (14/1, Sky Bet) looked a progressive sort last term, improving for the switch to handicapping when going close at Kempton back in November, and the Jukebox Jury gelding duly went one better back at that venue eight days later when beating Still Waiting.

Mark Johnston’s charge probably needed the run at Goodwood earlier in the month, finishing sixth behind Road To Dubai where he shaped as if a longer trip might suit; this longer distance is expected to elicit some improvement in the Middleham runner and unlikely to be fazed by conditions he can get back on the scoresheet from his basement mark.
