Brian Healy gives his race-by-race selections and best bets for Friday's UK and Irish horse racing fixtures.

Six UK and Irish horse racing fixtures go to post throughout Friday, and the day’s action on the flat comes from Ascot, where there is Listed action on the racecard; while over the sticks there are fixtures at Hexham, Fontwell and Gowran Park in Ireland.

In the evening meanwhile, all-weather fixtures go to post at Southwell on fibresand, and Dundalk in Ireland on polytrack.

Ascot (flat) - 2.00 - 4.55pm (6 races)
Gowran Park (jumps) - 2.05 - 5.30pm (7 races)
Hexham (jumps) - 2.15 - 5.05pm (6 races)
Fontwell (jumps) - 2.25 - 5.15pm (6 races)
Southwell (flat, aw) - 5.25 - 8.30pm (7 races)
Dundalk (flat, aw) - 5.45 -8.45pm (7 races)

FRIDAY 4 OCTOBER NAP SELECTION

ASCOT

(2.35) CAP FRANCAIS (8/1, William Hill) could be worth chancing to get back on the scoreboard despite running a few poor races in recent times.

A dual-winner last term, he twice placed in Listed company before the step up to Group class found him out; but Ed Walker’s charge could appreciate the drop back into a Listed race, and if he were to show the sort of form that saw him chase home Cape Of Good Hope at Epsom in April then he would have solid claims in this field.

The Frankel gelding is perhaps not one to write off just yet now his sights are lowered, and with soft ground form in the book he could go well.

2.00 - Tulfarris
2.35 - Cap Francais
3.10 - Marshal Dan
3.45 - Landa Beach
4.20 - Caravan Of Hope
4.55 - Mubakker

GOWRAN PARK

(3.50) SURIN (5/2, Ladbrokes) showed some progressive form last term, scoring in a bumper at Market Rasen prior to joining Gordon Elliott and she made a good first impression over hurdles when finding only Gardens of Babylon too strong by a half-length at Punchestown.

The Authorized filly gained revenge on the same rival next time, scoring by a nose at Fairyhouse, and she was far from disgraced subsequently when beaten around six lengths into third behind Sir Erec at Leopardstown when thrown into Grade One company to contest the Spring Juvenile Hurdle.

She hasn’t been seen since, but this looks a winnable return to action and if she can show a similar level of form on her reappearance then she could prove a tough nut to crack.

2.05 - Soviet Pimpernel
2.40 - Abracadabras
3.15 - Joy’s Gift
3.50 - Surin
4.25 - Quantamental
5.00 - Tiger Twenty Two
5.30 - Bigbadandbeautiful

HEXHAM

(3.25) It could be worth chancing on the fitness of SENOR LOMBARDY (11/8, William Hill) on his reappearance, and Keith Dalgleish’s charge can go close here.

The Milan gelding won a bumper here back in October 2017, beating Klare Castle, and he followed up over hurdles with a defeat of Coole Hall at Kelso before suffering a reversal behind the same rival at Newcastle next time.

He shaped with some promise over fences last term, finishing fourth on his return from a year off and then holding every chance when falling at Kelso next time. He was possibly amiss back over hurdles at Ayr in January and hasn’t been seen since.

However, his form to date sets him out as the standard-bearer here and he could prove a tough nut to crack on his reappearance if fully wound up.

2.15 - Somethingaboutangela
2.50 - Echiquier
3.25 - Senor Lombardy
4.00 - Only Orsenfoolsies
4.35 - Orioninnverness
5.05 - Moorlands Mist

FONTWELL

(3.35) TOMMY RAPPER (11/10, Ladbrokes) showed some promise in a couple of chase starts last term, finishing a decent third on his debut in this sphere behind the smart Bags Groove, and although Dan Skelton’s charge finished the season back over timber he could be worth chancing to get off the mark on his seasonal return back over the larger obstacles.

A three-time winner over timber during the 2017/18 campaign, he finished off last campaign chasing home Au Ptits Soins in the Grade Three Gaskells Handicap Hurdle at Aintree, and if running to a similar level over fences then he could get off the mark in this sphere with experience of fences to call upon.

2.25 - King’s Temptation
3.00 - Botox Has
3.35 - Tommy Rapper
4.10 - Capone
4.45 - Soupy Soups
5.15 - Tea Time Fred

DUNDALK

(6.15) SHINES HER LIGHT (2/1, Paddy Power) has shown a fair level of ability in her four starts to date, and having been denied only by a short-head on her debut at Naas last month Jessica Harrington’s charge can get off the mark here.

The No Nay Never filly can be considered a shade unlucky not to have won as she was denied a clear run at a crucial stage and the winner got first run. The front pair had pulled almost four lengths clear of the rest, and likely to find further improvement she could be worth chancing to go one place better despite a 6lbs hike in the ratings.

The drop back to seven furlongs shouldn’t be a problem, and with the potential to progress she gets the vote to open her win account.

5.10 - Brunelle
5.45 - Marmolata
6.15 - Shines Her Light
6.45 - Fort Myers
7.15 - Crotchet
7.45 - Fascinating Spirit
8.15 - Farnese
8.45 - Quote

SOUTHWELL

(6.00) JUMP THE GUN (2/1, Bet365) won on his only previous visit here, and Jamie Osborne’s charge can strike again despite having to give 4lbs and more to this field.

The Make Believe colt has shown largely consistent and useful form in his six career starts to date, latterly running out a seven lengths’ winner over Qinwan over six furlongs here last month. He tries seven furlongs now, which could elicit some further improvement and he should have no issue with the extra yardage here.

He has to carry a penalty for that success, but the suspicion is that he has more to offer, and he is taken to strike again given that he has already proven himself on this surface unlike most of his rivals.

5.25 - Senorita Grande
6.00 - Jump The Gun
6.30 - Borsdane Word
7.00 - Blowing Dixie
7.30 - Duke Of Alba
8.00 - Kuwait Shield
8.30 - Muqarred
