Enable odds-on for King George VI but Frankie Dettori is not writing off rivals

Enable remains the bookmaker’s pick to win this Saturday’s King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes, but jockey Frankie Dettori insists there will be no ‘freebies’ at Ascot.

Enable is the odds-on favourite at 4/7 with Ladbrokes at the time of writing, but brand ambassador Dettori, who will be riding John Gosden’s thoroughbred, is expecting a big test from the likes of 11/4 Crystal Ocean and 8/1 Anthony Van Dyck.

“I am feeling good and excited ahead of the King George tomorrow but I would be lying if I said I wasn’t feeling nervous,” Dettori wrote his latest blog for Ladbrokes. “I ride one of the best and most loved horses in the world in Enable. As I expected, everyone has turned up for the race and in these big races you never get a freebie.

“The reception she got at the Coral-Eclipse was remarkable. I have never seen Sandown so busy and I am sure that a lot of people will turn up for her on Saturday. I just hope that she will show her stuff.

“Now that she’s had a race, she is race fit. I rode her on Wednesday and she was in good form. Obviously, Crystal Ocean is an improving horse and I won the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes with him. We have the Derby winner too, so it’s not going to be a walkover.

“However, we know what Enable is capable of, so my fingers are crossed that everything goes well.

“If everything does go well then the Juddmonte International Stakes will be next I am sure but the main target is the Arc. Let’s get Saturday over and done with first.

“I have another busy day at Ascot aside from Enable. I ride Beatboxer (2.25) in the Porsche Handicap. He is ok; just a little bit up and down. I ride Vale Of Kent (3pm) but I am not so sure about him; he’s got a penalty. He is a lovely horse who tries hard, but I would think 7f is more his gig. It is a valuable race though so we will roll the dice.

“I have lots to look forward to next week at Glorious Goodwood with Stradivarius Tuesday, Too Darn Hot Wednesday, and Mehdaayih Thursday. This is basically a second Royal Ascot. Most of the good horses from Ascot turn up here and I think we are in store for another amazing five days.

“When Too Darn Hot ran at Ascot there was only half a length between me and Circus Maximus. We closed the gap with Phoenix Of Spain. I think my horse has improved a little bit after that nice win in France so he should be very competitive.

“Stradivarius is always consistent. I think the Godolphin horse has closed the gap a little bit; I think he is better over two miles. My horse is a fighter. He won’t go down easily.”
