Pundits predicting a bookies' bonanza in the Durban July

A predicted 8,000 bets a second will be placed on the day of the Greyville Durban July meeting and that could spell a bookies' bonanza.

Register with Sportingbet for a R1500 "risk free" bet and the chance to win R1,000,000

The prestigious R3.5 million race at Greyville racecourse (due off 16:20 local time) will be contested by 20 runners and each and every one can be given a chance of sorts.

Bookmakers are likely to see money across the board and not just for the fancied runners, who are headed by last year's Durban July hero Pomodoro.

The big-race favourite is currently trading as short as 9/2, although he is available to back at a slightly more generous 6/1 with Sportingbet.

However, even that price might be on the tight side in such an open race with Gold Circle racing director Graeme Hawkins saying this week: “I believe they should be betting 8-1 the field.”

He might well be right as the last horse to win back-to-back was El Picha, who triumphed in 1999 and 2000, while you have to go even further back to find the last horse to carry top weight of 60kg to victory.

On the flip side, he does have what looks a favourable barrier draw in 7, whereas he won from an “impossible” 20 last year. Perhaps the bookies have got him right after all?  Our experts have weighed up the positives and negatives surrounding his chances and given their verdict.

Pomodoro is one of four Sean Tarry-trained runners and a few shrewdies are tipping up one of the other three, E-Jet, as the best each-way bet of the race, while our resident tipster Nigel Ridgway has nailed his colours to the mast of one of the bottom weights.

It all promises to be one of the most open and exciting Julys for many a year and punters are strongly advised to get their bets on early and take advantage of the fantastic free bet offers available. That could make the difference between winning and losing on this year's race!
