Brian Healy 10 Jun 2016

With the likes of the Listed Ganton Stakes from York, the Listed Scurry Stakes from Sandown, and also the Scottish Sprint Cup from Musselburgh all featuring on the afternoon’s schedule, there is plenty for punters to look forward to.

And Brian Healy gives his usual Channel 4 Racing tips and selections for all the afternoon’s live TV racing action.

1:50 York - Queen Mother´s Cup (Lady Amateur Riders) (Handicap) Cl3 1m4f

OCEANE (6/1, Sky Bet) makes plenty of appeal, having produced a solid effort returned to the flat at Salisbury two weeks ago when finishing fourth behind Starchitect.

Alan King’s charge developed into a useful hurdler last term, winning twice and contesting a couple of Grade Two contests after arriving from France where he was a winner on the level, and he was only beaten around three lengths in that Salisbury run.

Now tried in cheek-pieces, the Kentucky Dynamite gelding won’t want for assistance from the saddle with top amateur Serena Brotherton booked to ride, and no surprise to see him going close in this contest.

Alan King can get Saturday's Channel 4 Racing action off to a winning start with Oceane.

2:10 Sandown - BetStars.uk For Horse Racing Handicap Cl3 1m1f

DOMMERSEN (4/1, Ladbrokes) arrives in search of a hat-trick of wins, having won on his seasonal return at Lingfield where he had a pair of subsequent winners behind, and following up with a ready success at Wolverhampton with a defeat of Winter Rose and others.

John Gosden’s charge has been raised 6lbs for that latest success returning to the turf, but he is unexposed and looks a progressive sort who could have better to come assuming he handles the switch back onto this surface.

2:25 York - BetStars.uk Home of Spin & Bet Stakes (Handicap) Cl2 7f

FELIX LEITER (5/1, Coral) wasn’t winning out of turn when notching up a first success in the better part of two years at Lingfield last month, running out a comfortable winner over George Cinq under this rider.

Karl Burke’s charge won three times as a juvenile, and subsequently produced numerous good efforts in defeat so his success didn’t come out of the blue where he showed a good attitude to battle back once headed and was going away at the line.

This is tougher under a 6lbs hike in the weights and higher grade, but he has gone well here in the past with a juvenile win and runner-up finish to his name in his two starts at this venue, and he may be able to build on that success here.

Felix Leiter can back up his recent Lingfield success by going in again at York.

2:45 Sandown - BetStars By Pokerstars Handicap Cl2 1m14y

A chance is taken that KING’S PAVILION (4/1, Sky Bet) can build on his victory at Epsom eight days ago, where he beat Stamp Hill by a half-length despite being hampered.

Mark Johnston’s charge won twice last term at Wetherby and Ripon, but found winning difficult thereafter although was regularly in the frame, placing five times from seven subsequent outings before getting back on the scoresheet.

This is tougher from a 5lbs higher mark, but the return to this longer trip holds no fears for the King’s Best colt, while underfoot conditions wouldn’t prove a hindrance to his chances with his Wetherby win last time coming on similar ground.

3:00 York - Best Western Hotels Ganton Stakes (Listed Race) Cl1 1m

William Haggas has his string in decent form, and MUTAKAYYEF (9/2, Bet365) is chanced on his return to action having been gelded since his final outing last term at Newmarket where he finished third to Energia Davos in the Group Three Darley Stakes.

The Sea The Stars gelding has just one win to his name, which came at Sandown a couple of seasons back, but he has shown he can go well fresh when finishing a half-length runner-up at Newmarket back from a break behind Berkshire in the 2014 Darley Stakes, and he pushed the smart Mondialiste to a neck on his return to action last August in the Strensall here.

Connections persevere with him, and although deserted by Paul Hanagan, he can go close with Pat Cosgrave a more-than-able deputy.

Mutakayyef can win at York on Saturday.

3:10 Musselburgh - William Hill Scottish Tartan Trophy (A Consolation For Scottish Sprint Cup) (Handicap) Cl3 5f

DISTANT PAST (8/1, Sky Bet) was well-fancied for this contest twelve months ago, having won three of his four previous starts which included two at this venue. However, after a nightmare passage he could only finish fourth behind the reopposing Pearl Acclaim.

Kevin Ryan’s charge hasn’t been at his best since, and he shaped as if in need of the outing at York on his return to action in May behind Duke of Firenze. Not seen to best effect back here in late-May behind Bowson Fred, he nevertheless boasts solid claims if able to build on that run from the same mark, and no surprise if he were to post an improved performance with a strong pace guaranteed for him to aim at.

3:20 Sandown - BetStars.uk Scurry Stakes (Listed Race) Cl1 5f6y

EASTON ANGEL (11/4, Paddy Power) should go close in a competitive sprint, with Michael Dods’ charge showing she had trained on when winning on her return to action at York last month to land the Listed Westow Stakes.

A dual-winner last term, scoring at Musselburgh and Beverley, the Dark Angel filly found only Acapulco too strong in the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot, which was an excellent effort nonetheless as she finished clear of the third horse home, Besharah.

Further good runs followed in both the Cherry Hinton at Newmarket when finishing fourth to Illuminate, and in the Lowther when third to Besharah, and she again lost little caste when finishing fifth in the Rosebery at Ayr on her final start.

Likely to come on for her debut success, she is effective on this ground and with race-fitness on her side, she can come out on top.

Easton Angel can win again by landing Saturday's Scurry Stakes.

3:35 York - 888Sport Charity Sprint (Handicap) Cl2 6f

A competitive big-field sprint can go the way of IKERRIN ROAD (12/1, Paddy Power) who has improved leaps and bounds this term, winning three of his four starts.

Two of those wins came on the all-weather at Wolverhampton, but John Quinn’s Iffraaj colt proved himself just as effective on turf when beating Yattwee at Newmarket back in April, winning a shade cosily despite the one length verdict.

That runner-up has gone on to pick up a win since, thus boosting the form, and while he has a shade more to contend with upped a further 5lbs in the weights, he may not have reached his ceiling yet and can progress again.

3:45 Musselburgh - William Hill Scottish Sprint Cup (A Heritage Handicap) Cl2 5f

It could be worth chancing THESME (10/1, Bet Victor) despite the Exceed and Excel filly not having the best of draws out of the number four box; however, Nigel Tinkler’s lightly-raced sort was a progressive performer last term, winning three times which included a valuable apprentices’ handicap at York on her final outing.

Having shaped as if in need of the run on ground clearly too soft for her, she bounced back from that outing to finish just under two lengths’ third to the reopposing Duke Of Firenze, and she looks to hold solid claims of reversing that form under significantly better terms that sees her 9lbs better off with that rival.

It won’t be an easy task to defy her poor draw, but she can continue her progression and no surprise to see her making the frame at least under Royston Ffrench.
