Our expert takes a look through the ante-post betting for the feature races on day five at Royal Ascot and provides readers with his tips on Saturday 22nd June.

The curtain is drawn on Royal Ascot 2019 in fitting fashion on Saturday, with the day five card featuring some excellent races. The Hardwicke Stakes will be the first Grouped race to wow fans on day five, before the final Group One, the Diamond Jubilee Stakes brings this year’s Royal meeting to a thrilling conclusion.

Our expert has taken a look through both of these prestigious races and provides readers with his ante-post tips.

2019 Royal Ascot Day Five Tips

3:40pm Hardwicke Stakes (Group 2) 1m4f

It now looks certain that Crystal Ocean will take his chance in the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes on day two, blowing this year’s renewal of the Hardwicke Stakes wide open. Kew Garden’s current odds suggest Aidan O’Brien has grander plans for his St Leger winner, leaving Sourthern France to spearhead the Ballydoyle challenge.

Defoe came through to pip Kew Gardens to the post in the Coronation Cup at Epsom and Roger Varian’s colt deserves to head the betting. Mirage Dancer could also be a player, but I’m keen to back GHAIYYAATH (5/1 William Hill) as Charlie Appleby's colt makes his first start on home soil for the best part of 20 months.

Ghaaiyyath hasn’t appeared in Britain since October 2017, where he defeated a decent field in the Group Three Autumn Stakes. A year-long injury lay-off followed, but Appleby’s colt returned with a bang at Longchamp towards the end of last season, powering to victory over Sacred Life in the Prix du Prince d’Orange.

The Godolphin flag-bearer picked up where he left off when he made his reappearance back in April, streaking clear from the front of the field in the Prix d’Harcourt before easing to a two length success. Waldgeist announced his own Ascot intentions in the Prix Ganay, lowering Ghaaiyyath’s colours quite comfortably. Yet, this is an easier task and stepping up in trip should suit this talented son of Dubawi. If the ground remains soft, Ghaiyyath could be tough to beat.

Main Bet – GHAIYYATH (5/1 William Hill)
Next Best – DEFOE (6/1 bet365)

4:20pm Diamond Jubilee Stakes (Group One) (British Champion Series) 6f

Invincible Army announced himself as the leading contender for the Diamond Jubilee this week, running away with the Clipper at York. James Tate’s colt was my best bet of the meeting in the Commonwealth Cup last year but failed to land a blow. Invincible Army is much more mature now, but in sprints of this nature, I’m always prepared to swerve the market leaders.

City Light ran a blinding race to finish second here last year and could be involved again. French challenger, Inns Of Court looks a looming danger, but Saturday’s main event looks wide open to me and the value could lie with US raider, BOUND FOR NOWHERE (16/1 bet365).

This lightly-raced five-year-old has been an integral part of Wesley Ward’s Ascot team for the past two seasons. Bound For Nowhere ran a mighty race to place fourth behind Caravaggio, Harry Angel and Blue Point in the 2017 Commonwealth Cup, bettering that result in last year’s Diamond Jubilee, where he hung on well to finish third - despite running a solo effort for much of the race and hanging badly left when Joel Rosario tried to find some company in the closing stages.

After ending last season running over a mile, Ward dropped Bound For Nowhere back to sprinting distances in the Shakertown Stakes on his reappearance, where the favourite was pipped to the post by Imprimis after cutting out the running. Bound For Nowhere has plenty of Ascot experience and performed superbly in this race 12 months ago. If he is better drawn this time around and finds a bit of early cover, he could give the market leaders a real headache.

Main Bet – BOUND FOR NOWHERE e/w (16/1 be365)
Next Best – CITY LIGHT e/w (10/1 bet365)
