2018 Galway Festival day 3 betting tips: Race-by-race selections for Irish racing's summer feature

Brian Healy gives his race-by-race selections for day three of the Galway Festival, Irish racing's summer feature meeting.

Wednesday’s horse racing schedule takes in a third day of action at Galway as the Galway Festival continues, and a seven-race card goes to post at the Ballybrit track with the Galway Plate the big race of the evening.

5:10 - Win Big With Tote Maiden Hurdle (5yo+) 2m5f
5:40 - thetote.com Handicap Hurdle (4yo+ 81-123) 2m5f
6:10 - Tote Irish EBF Mares Handicap Hurdle (4yo+) 2m½f
6:45 - Win Big With Tote (Q.R.) Maiden (3yo+) 1m4f
7:20 - thetote.com Galway Plate (Chase Handicap) (Grade A) (4yo+) 2m6½f
8:00 - thetote.com Handicap (3yo) 1m½f
8:30 - Win Big With Tote Handicap (3yo+ 60-80) 2m½f

Another exciting fixture awaits punters on day three of the premier Irish summer feature, and Brian Healy gives his selections for every race on the third day of another competitive racecard.

5:10 - Win Big With Tote Maiden Hurdle (5yo+) 2m5f

GETAREASON (7/2, Betfair) showed plenty on his debut at Downpatrick back in March, running out a four lengths’ winner over Ruthless Article; Willie Mullins’ charge has subsequently finished third on both outings since at Punchestown and Listowel, latterly beaten five lengths behind The Red Menace.

The Getaway gelding could take a forward step now hurdling for his in-form yard, and this extra furlong is unlikely to pose an issue given his stamina-laden pedigree.

Likely to improve now sent over obstacles, he can make a winning hurdles debut under Ruby Walsh.

Willie Mullins can saddle a winner on day three of the Galway Festival.

5:40 - thetote.com Handicap Hurdle (4yo+ 81-123) 2m5f

AYDOUN (7/1, Paddy Power) arrives fit from the flat, and the Mastercraftsman gelding can win again having struck on his last hurdles outing at this meeting twelve months ago.

Dermot Weld’s charge ran out a six lengths’ winner over Big Ben, building on a promising debut effort just five days’ previously; and he wasn’t beaten far at the Curragh back in June when finishing two lengths’ third behind Jan Van Eyck.

Thoroughly unexposed over hurdles, he can remain competitive and no surprise if he finds some further improvement back in this sphere on his handicap debut where he appears well-treated.

6:10 - Tote Irish EBF Mares Handicap Hurdle (4yo+) 2m½f

MISTY MILLY (9/1, Betfair) has won her last two starts over hurdles, scoring at Fairyhouse in April and then going in at Down Royal the following month when running out a three lengths’ winner over Derby De Thaix.

Garvan Donnelly’s charge had been looking exposed over hurdles, but she has found a jolt of improvement, and that latest success suggested there was more to come from her.

She has an 8lbs rise in the weights to contend with, but she remains open to further improvement now she has found form, and with Jack Kennedy in the plate it wouldn’t come as a big shock if she were to go close again.

6:45 - Win Big With Tote (Q.R.) Maiden (3yo+) 1m4f

CRECERELLE (15/8, Betfair) has hinted that a win may not be too far away with back-to-back runner-up efforts at this venue twelve months ago, and then at Leopardstown on his return from an absence in April where he went down only by a half-length behind Cimeara.

The Redoute’s Choice colt shaped as if a stiffer test would suit, and while he has quicker ground to contend with here, he can continue to improve.

The form of his latest runner-up effort has been boosted by the winner since winning at Group Three and Listed level, and likely to have more to offer back in maiden company upped in trip he gets the vote to open his account.

7:20 - thetote.com Galway Plate (Chase Handicap) (Grade A) (4yo+) 2m6½f

JURY DUTY (12/1, Ladbrokes) took really well to chasing last term, winning twice which included the Grade Two Florida Pearl Chase; Gordon Elliott’s charge also found only one too good in the Neville Hotels Chase, and he performed with plenty of credit on his final outing of last campaign when third to The Storyteller in the Growise Champion Novice Chase.

The Well Chosen gelding had looked a non-stayer in the National Hunt Chase at the Cheltenham Festival previously, and this drop in trip should hold no fears for the Elliott runner who features on a potentially lenient mark on his handicap debut.

He has the potential to improve further over fences, and with Davy Russell in the saddle he looks set to post a big effort returning from a break of three months.

8:00 - thetote.com Handicap (3yo) 1m½f

EL GRECO (4/1, Paddy Power) has improved with each run, scoring back-to-back wins at Cork and Killarney either side of a short break, and Aidan O’Brien’s charge can land the hat-trick.

The latest of those wins saw the Galileo colt score by a head over Mattymolls Gaga, all out; but he still looked raw around the edges and may benefif from a longer trip. He is kept to one mile here however, and he has to give weight away to this field; but likely to find further improvement on his handicap debut he could be the one to keep onside.

This opening mark doesn’t look harsh, and still with the potential to do better he gets the vote to land the three-timer.

8:30 - Win Big With Tote Handicap (3yo+ 60-80) 2m½f

WATERVILLE DANCER (11/2, Paddy Power) has been knocking on the door in recent outings, making the frame in five of his last six starts, and the Nathaniel gelding can get off the mark here.

Charles Byrnes’ charge remains a maiden after nine runs on the flat, but he won over hurdles at Killarney in May, and he returned to the level at Leopardstown last month to run third behind Tarazani, beaten three lengths.

He is only 1lb higher here, but he has a good 7lbs claimer booked for this outing and he can post a big effort here as he bids to open his account.
