Day One Double at Doncaster

2:20pm Conditions Stakes – SHABAABY 15/8

4:50pm Conditions Stakes – MIRAGE DANCER 15/8

Demon’s Rock will be searching for a fifth win on the bounce when he helps open the St Leger Festival. Tom Dascombe’s colt has impressed on the handicap circuit and this presents an excellent opportunity to claim a high-profile victory.

The same can be said for SHABAABY, who has only been seen twice so far during his juvenile career, but his form like looks the most impressive of the bunch.

Owen Burrow’s charge began his career with a strong showing in a 10k novice contest at Salisbury, finishing third behind Nyaleti and Billesdon Brook. The Kyllachy progeny then encountered soft ground for the first time at Newmarket, but he made light of the conditions to beat Travelcard and Rebel Streak – who had finished second in a handicap at Glorious Goodwood – but almost four lengths.

Jim Crowley may sit a long way behind Silvestre De Sousa in his attempt to retain his Champion Jockey crown, but the Englishman has really come to the fore as superstar jockey during this campaign and he will see this as the perfect opportunity to get his St Leger Festival off to a flying start.

4:50pm Sports ID - Strength In Sport Conditions Stakes (Class 2) 1m2f

Mount Logan is the only course-and-distance winner in the field and Andrea Atzeni is always a jockey to be feared here at Doncaster. However, Roger Varian’s six-year-old flopped on the only occasion he has encountered ground softer than good-to-soft.

Red Verdon has flattered to deceive after being heavily backed on his reappearance at Chester and Best Of Days looks a mile away from the horse than won the Group Two Royal Lodge Stakes at Newmarket last September.

This leaves MIRAGE DANCER as the most likely winner of this conditions stakes contest and he should be far too good for his older rivals dropping down in Class.

He recorded a win here at Doncaster on his debut for Sir Michael Stoute, before running on well from a tricky draw to claim fourth in the Dee Stakes. A step up to a mile-and-a-half ended in a lengthy defeat to Cracksman last time out, but his previous outing was over ten furlongs at Royal Ascot, where he acquitted himself well to finish just over a length behind Benbatl in the Hampton Court Stakes.

Soft ground shouldn’t be an issue for this Frankel colt and he should be able to score a straight forward victory over some out-of-form rivals.
