Brian Healy gives his race-by-race selections and best bets for the final day racecard of the 2017 Glorious Goodwood Festival.

Saturday’s fixture list of horse racing action sees the culmination of the 2017 Glorious Goodwood Festival with another seven-race card taking place at the Sussex venue to bring the curtain down on another top-class week.

The feature race of the day is the competitive cavalry charge of the Stewards’ Cup, a fast and furious six furlongs dash along the Goodwood straight; while there is Group racing action with the Group Three Gordon Stakes also going to post on the day’s card.

1:50 Qatar Stewards' Sprint Handicap (Consolation Race For The Qatar Stewards' Cup) Cl2 (3yo+) 6f ITV
2:25 Qatar Summer Handicap Cl2 (3yo+) 1m6f ITV
3:00 Qatar Gordon Stakes (Group 3) Cl1 (3yo) 1m3f218y ITV
3:35 Qatar Stewards' Cup Handicap (Heritage Handicap) Cl2 (3yo+) 6f ITV
4:10 Qatar EBF Stallions Maiden Stakes (Plus 10 Race) Cl2 (2yo) 7f
4:45 Qatar Handicap Cl2 (3yo 0-105) 7f
5:20 Qatar Apprentice Handicap Cl3 (3yo+ 0-90) 1m1f11y

Ed Chamberlain and the ITV Racing team will have the best of the day’s action from Goodwood as part of their Saturday broadcast where four races will be shown live from the Sussex track, and Brian Healy gives his race-by-race selections for the final day of the Glorious Goodwood Festival.

1:50 Qatar Stewards' Sprint Handicap (Consolation Race For The Qatar Stewards' Cup) Cl2 (3yo+) 6f ITV

The consolation race for the Stewards’ Cup proper should provide an early indication regarding the best of the draw, and MANSHOOD (12/1, William Hill) could be the one to side with to follow up his win last time out at Hamilton where he ran out a two lengths winner over Inexes.

Paul Midgeley’s charge had earlier racked up a trio of runner-up efforts, beaten a half-length or less on all three of those starts prior to his win; penalised and upped in class for this contest, he remains a progressive and lightly-raced sort who could have further improvement still to come, and the Iffraaj gelding is proven on soft conditions so he should give a good account with Andrea Atzeni in the saddle.

Andrea Atzeni can ride another Glorious Goodwood winner aboard Manshood for Paul Midgeley.

SAIGON CITY (9/1, Paddy Power) has taken another forwards step with his form this year, finding only Chemical Charge too strong on his seasonal debut at Doncaster prior to lowering the colours of subsequent Royal Ascot scorer Oriental Fox at Newmarket when last seen in May.

Declan Carroll’s charge was a winner at York last May, going on to finish fifth in that season’s Northumberland Plate and third in the Shergar Cup Stayers’ race, and his progress has continued into this season.

He’s clearly been a difficult sort to train as he remains a relatively low-mileage sort for a seven-year old, so it isn’t beyond possibility that he may still have some further improvement to come. While this is a deeper race than the one he took in at Newmarket, he is proven in soft ground and could still have some scope to do better despite a 5lbs rise in the weights.

3:00 Qatar Gordon Stakes (Group 3) Cl1 (3yo) 1m3f218y ITV

Already proven in Group company, Crystal Ocean and Khalidi are both entitled to go close; but the former has looked a tricky ride in his starts and will need to settle better in this small field, while the latter has to prove effectiveness on this softer ground.

It could be worth taking a value punt with MOUNT MORIAH (7/1, Paddy Power) who takes a big step up in class following bloodless wins in handicaps this season, but Ralph Beckett’s charge could prove equal to the task to register a fourth straight win.

The Mount Nelson gelding most recently ran out a four lengths winner over Getback In Paris at Ascot last month, readily coming clear to score impressively over the longer trip; but he showed effectiveness over shorter when posting a similar effort previously at Newbury, beating Splash Around by a similar margin.

Those pieces of form don’t leave him with a great deal to find against these rivals as he steps into Group Three company for the first time; the manner of those easy handicap wins suggest he has plenty of further improvement, while he is proven to handle softer conditions so he is worth chancing that he can improve again.

3:35 Qatar Stewards' Cup Handicap (Heritage Handicap) Cl2 (3yo+) 6f ITV

SIR DANCEALOT (12/1, Bet365) was progressive as a juvenile last term, winning three of his six starts which included a York Listed contest where he beat Dream Of Dreams cosily; David Elsworth’s charge subsequently posted a fair effort in the Racing Post Trophy although he arguably failed to stay the trip.

The Sir Prancealot gelding has been highly tried this term in Group races at Ascot, running well when sixth behind Blue Point in the Pavilion Stakes; he posted arguably a career-best when beaten just a half-length behind Above The Rest at Newmarket over seven furlongs, beaten a half-length in the Bunbury Cup.

Proven in big fields, the drop back to six furlongs won’t be an issue for the Sir Prancealot gelding, and assuming he can handle the softer conditions here then he ought to go well and can resume winning ways off his low weight with Ryan Moore an eye-catching jockey booking for this assignment

Sir Dancealot (right) can win the Stewards' Cup, the feature of Saturday's Glorious Goodwood racecard.

4:10 Qatar EBF Stallions Maiden Stakes (Plus 10 Race) Cl2 (2yo) 7f

BATHSHEBA BAY (5/4, William Hill) looks the most solid option in a potentially informative maiden contest, and Richard Hannon’s charge showed some good form when beaten a short-head in the mud at Sandown last month, bumping into a good sort in Red Mist who could turn out to be a smart type.

The pair had pulled clear of the third horse home, and she had looked the likeliest winner for some way before just being outbattled by the eventual winner who edged in front on the line.

Sure to progress again, he has shown he can handle softer ground and the Footstepsinthesand colt is likely to prove hard to beat with further improvement likely to come.

4:45 Qatar Handicap Cl2 (3yo 0-105) 7f

The soft underfoot conditions could see a return to winning form from TAAMOL (15/8, Paddy Power) who arrives here looking to atone for a poor effort on quicker ground at Royal Ascot last time out in the Jersey Stakes.

Sir Michael Stoute’s Helmet colt was a debut winner last term in the mud at Newmarket, beating Devil’s Bridge impressively, after which he was thrust into a Listed race at Doncaster where he was perhaps unsuited by the ground when finishing fifth to Rodaini.

Better for the run at Newcastle in April, he lowered the colours of the useful Larchmont Lad back in softer ground at Newmarket to win the King Charles II Stakes, scoring by a head before finishing down the field at Ascot.

He could have further progress to come back on soft ground, and making his handicap debut here he doesn’t look harshly treated on the pick of his form so he may be able to resume winning ways with conditions ideal and Jim Crowley doing the steering.

Storm Ahead can round off Glorious Goodwood with a win in the finale.

5:20 Qatar Apprentice Handicap Cl3 (3yo+ 0-90) 1m1f11y

The finale to the 2017 Glorious Goodwood Festival could go the way of STORM AHEAD (6/1, Bet365) who looked progressive having switched to handicaps last term, scoring in the mud at Salisbury with a defeat of Sinfonietta, and backing that run up with a good silver medal finish behind God Willing at Newmarket.

Fourth on his final start of that campaign, he has been running better than his bare form figures suggest in some strong handicaps, not beaten far into fifth behind Murad Khan at Windsor on his latest start.

The handicapper has dropped him 2lbs in the wake of previous efforts this term, and returning to a softer surface for this latest outing the Iffraaj gelding can post a big run with Tyler Saunders good value for his 7lbs claim taking the reins.
