Jeremy Hunt odds slashed as Tory leadership race takes major twist

In what would be one of the biggest shocks in the history of political betting, Jeremy Hunt is now just 10/3 to beat Boris Johnson in the race to lead the Conservative Party.

Hunt’s odds have shortened dramatically over the weekend, as rival and odds-on favourite Johnson has come under pressure to answer questions on a recent domestic incident.

Bookmaker Betway was offering a distant 12/1 on Hunt winning next month’s members’ ballot at the start of the weekend, but he is now as short as 10/3.

Johnson, recently dubbed a ‘coward’ by Hunt due to his reluctance to take part in TV debates, has drifted markedly out to 2/9, his biggest price since the first round of Tory MPs voting took place a fortnight ago.

“The fear for Boris Johnson backers is that there’s always the chance of something calamitous happening,” Betway’s Alan Alger told Bettingpro.com. “Boris often gets himself into sticky situations and the latest incident has caused him to drift to 2/9 from 1/20.

“There’s sure to be a few more twists and turns until the winner is announced on 22nd July, though Hunt, 10/3 from a massive 12/1, could pull off one of the biggest ever shocks in the history of political betting if the momentum continues to swing his way.”
