Tennessee Titans at Jacksonville Jaguars

The first few weeks of the season could not have gone much worse for the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Floridian franchise was hoping that the offseason arrival of former Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles would solve their quarterback issue that had plagued them in recent years, but the veteran signal-caller had very little chance to make much of an impact in Jacksonville as he suffered a broken clavicle in a hit from Kansas City lineman Chris Jones during week one and it now appears as though he will be sidelined until week 11 at the earliest – a huge blow to the Jaguars. And if that was not bad enough, star defensive back Jalen Ramsey is now trying to force a trade away from the team after being involved in a heated sideline dispute with head coach Doug Marrone during their week two game against Houston.

So what else could go wrong for Jacksonville? The results of course. A week one win over highly-rated Kansas City was never on the cards so it was no major surprise when they gave up 40 points and almost 500 yards in a convincing defeat, but they came agonisingly close to knocking off Houston a week later. The Jaguars staged a late fourth-quarter rally that saw them get to within a point of the Texans, but instead of tying it up with a kicked extra point head coach Marrone went ‘all in’ and kept his offense on the field for what would have been a game-winning two-point conversion. That attempt failed and, needless to say, Marrone has been answering questions about it ever since. So can the Jaguars end the chatter about that massive gamble by getting their first win on the board on Thursday night?

Visiting TIAA Bank Stadium are a Tennessee team who have been a mixed bag during the first two weeks of the season. The Titans made a sensational start as they derailed the Browns hype train in Cleveland in week one, picking off Baker Mayfield three times in the third quarter to storm to a 43-13 victory and pull off the biggest surprise on opening day this season, and they were fancied to follow that up with another victory over an Indianapolis Colts outfit who must still be reeling somewhat from Andrew Luck’s blockbuster decision to retire on the eve of the season. Jacoby Brissett is doing a decent job of helping them get over Luck’s departure though, and his three-touchdown display handed Tennessee their first loss of the campaign. So can they bounce back?

This is a tough matchup to call, as is evidenced by the fact that the bookmakers have struggled to separate the two teams in the Moneyline market, with the Titans the slight favourites despite being the road team. It is understandable why the bookmakers are torn – the Jaguars did come painfully close to getting off the mark last weekend and while Tennessee’s rout of Cleveland was impressive, that week two loss to Indy does provide a reality check when it comes to how good they are. And of course, this is Thursday Night Football – the hardest game of the week to predict. Already this season we have seen back-to-back ‘upsets’ with the road team coming out on top in the first game of the week, so would any outcome really be a shock here!

I have made my choice though – I expect road teams to go 3-0 on Thursday Night Football. Tennessee did drop one to the Colts at the weekend and although Indy are not as strong as they would have been with Luck at the controls, this is still a pretty good football team so the Titans will hardly be in panic mode. This is a good opportunity for them to bounce back. Jacksonville have struggled mightily against the Titan’s rushing attack in recent seasons, giving up an average of 177 yards per game in a run of four straight defeats to the team from ‘Music City’, and their performances against the run through the first two weeks of this season have hardly instilled any confidence that this area of their defense has improved.

All of this will leave Derrick Henry licking his lips. The Tennessee running back has already racked up 252 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns through the first two games, and it is safe to say the Jaguars may be having nightmares about him after what he did to them last season. Henry was pretty quiet in the first meeting between the two teams, but he went off in Week 13 as he rampaged for 238 yards and four touchdowns off just 17 carries in a dominant win for his team. He may not reach those same heights here, but he has to be considered a leading contender to score in a Titans win.

And for the final leg of my bet, using Paddy Power’s Same Game Multi feature, I am backing this game to produce Under 46.5 Total Points. Tennessee may have run riot in week one, but that was only the third time since October 2017 that they have managed to score 30 points or more in a game and this Jaguars defense has rarely been torched in recent years, especially at home. When that did happen it was against Kansas City and it is safe to say that Jacksonville are not the first team, and they will not be the last team, to be picked apart by Patrick Mahomes & Co. They will run Tennessee close in a low-scoring encounter, but ultimately they will not be able to stop themselves falling to 0-3 as the Titans climb back above .500.
