NFL predictions for Week 5 of the 2019 NFL season. Will the New England Patriots and Kansas Cioty Chiefs maintain their perfect records, can the Philadelphia Eagles build on their big win over Green Bay in their last home game before a three-game road trip? Read on for all of our free predictions and betting tips.

New England Patriots at Washington Redskins (18:00 BST)

These two teams have experienced very different fortunes during the first four weeks of the season. The defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots have made a flying start by winning each of their first four games to take command of the AFC East, while the Washington Redskins have limped out of the blocks, losing their first four games to prop up the rest of the NFC East. Defensively they have been pretty much inept, with only the Miami Dolphins giving up more points so far, and on the opposite side of the football it has not been much better. The Redskins rank 29th in total yards, 29th in total points and 28th in turnovers, so the last thing they need right now is a meeting with a New England team who are firing on all cylinders despite being made to work for the win by Buffalo a week ago. The Patriots, simply put, should be far too good for woeful Washington on Sunday. Their defense has been outstanding for the first few weeks and should have no issues shutting down a Redskins offense led by rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins, and when the Patriots are in possession then Tom Brady & Co. will ensure that the visitors win this matchup by some distance. I expect the points total to be under 47.5 though – that has been a winning bet on all four of New England’s game so far and it is difficult to see Washington putting many points on the board outside of any they manage in ‘garbage time’. This is, after all, a unit that managed just three in a miserable defeat at the New York Giants a week ago.

New York Jets at Philadelphia Eagles (18:00 BST)

The Philadelphia Eagles underwhelmed as they went 1-2 through the first three weeks of the season, but did the Thursday night victory at Green Bay in week four provide them with the spark they needed? Jordan Howard finally burst into life with 105 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns as the Eagles ran over the much-hyped Packers defense en route to a 34-27 victory and they now have an opportunity to build on that victory when they host the winless New York Jets on Sunday. The season started well enough as they took a 16-0 lead over Buffalo in the season-opener, but the Jets fell apart in the final quarter-and-a-half of that one to lose by a point and it has been downhill ever since with convincing defeats at the hands of Cleveland and New England. A week four bye presented them with some extra time to iron out their issues before playing their fourth game of the season, but there are so many problems surrounding this franchise right now it is difficult to see how they will have turned things around enough to cause an upset here. Their offensive output has been nothing short of pathetic – they managed 105 total yards against New England – and defensively they have been getting gashed. To their credit they have been forcing turnovers, notching seven so far, but they do not serve much purpose if you do not turn them into points and New York have had serious issues scoring – they have managed just 33 points so far to average only 11 per game. It will be a case of ‘pick your poison’ for the Jets here. Either Carson Wentz and his fit-again receivers will take them apart through the air or the combination of Howard and Miles Sanders will run over them on the ground. Either way Philadelphia will run away with this one as the Jets offer very little in reply.

Indianapolis Colts at Kansas City Chiefs (Monday 01:20 BST)

The Kansas City Chiefs made hard work of it last weekend, but they did escape Detroit with a victory to maintain their 100% record. The Lions led at the end of the first and third quarters at Ford Field, and they took a three-point lead with only 151 seconds on the clock as they looked to be within touching distance of a surprise victory. However, that proved to be more than enough time for Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City offense, who marched downfield on a 13-play, 74-yard drive that was capped off by a one-yard touchdown by Darrel Williams. The Chiefs had got away with one and they will be eager to avoid similar drama in week five – but can they? The visitors to Arrowhead Stadium are an Indianapolis team who have ridden a rollercoaster during recent weeks. The Colts were stunned on the eve of the season when quarterback Andrew Luck announced his retirement, but they appeared to cope with that shock quite well as backup Jacoby Brissett, with the help of running back Marlon Mack, led them to a 2-1 start that saw their sole defeat come in overtime. Their momentum was halted by the disappointing home defeat to Oakland though, so expectations for post Luck-life will have been reigned in as they prepare for this trip to Kansas. And rightfully so. Mack should enjoy another successful day against a Chiefs defense that has been getting gashed on the ground this season, but ultimately they just do not have the level of firepower needed to keep pace with the hosts and they do not have the defense that can slow Mahomes & Co down.  The Colts will do their best to stick around and make this competitive for as long as possible, but eventually Kansas City will pull away, put plenty of points on the board an improve to 5-0.
