NFL predictions for Week 1 of the 2019 NFL season. The New Orleans Saints suffered a shock home defeat in their season opener a year ago – can they avoid a repeat of that disappointing loss when they host Houston for Monday Night Football? Read on for all of our free predictions and betting tips.

Houston Texans at New Orleans Saints (23:10 BST)

New Orleans is city known for inducing hangovers, as anyone who has hit Bourbon Street can attest to, but will the Saints be suffering a massive hangover when they step out onto the Superdome field for their season-opener?

New Orleans was in uproar back in January when their team’s Super Bowl quest ended in infamous fashion, with a horrendous no-call for a blatant pass interference ultimately denying them a place in the NFC Championship Game, and it would be fair to say it took quite some time for the city to get over that massive officiating blunder. Some are still not over it, but they cannot afford to dwell on that injustice ahead of the season-opener on Monday night because, as we saw last season, the Superdome is no stranger to suffering disappointment in a home opener either.

New Orleans’ 2018 campaign ended in disappointment and it started in an underwhelming way too as Tampa Bay rode some ‘Fitzmagic’ from Ryan Fitzpatrick to what many considered an improbably 48-40 win – how could the Bucs walk into the Superdome with the bearded QB at the controls on offense and somehow outgun the Saints in a shootout! That is exactly what they did though and Houston are going to need some similar magic this time round if they are to repeat Tampa Bay’s opening-day upset at the dome.

I just do not see that happening though. The Texans bolstered their offensive line at the weekend by bringing in Laremy Tunsil as part of a trade with Miami, but one man is not going to singlehandedly fix a group that ‘helped’ Deshaun Watson become the most sacked quarterback in the league last season. And on the opposite side of the football it is never good to lose a player of Jadeveon Clowney’s stature – his exit will hurt too.

So unless Watson can somehow muster that magic we saw from Fitzpatrick a year ago, I expect nothing other than a victory for the Saints. New Orleans are loaded with talent on both sides of the football and for me they are the team most likely to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl next February. Their road to Miami should start with a victory on Monday night, and a fairly comfortable win at that.
