Los Angeles Chargers at Oakland Raiders (Friday 01:20 BST)

The Los Angeles Chargers’ season appeared to be in a tailspin when they lost three straight games to slump to 2-5 after the first seven weeks, but back-to-back victories in recent weeks have given them renewed life in the race for the postseason. It may not have been convincing and they may have done their best to throw it away times, but the Chargers were able to stop the rot with a one-point victory in Chicago in week eight, and it appears as though that hard-fought win was just what the doctor ordered because one week later they produced their best performance of the season so far, on both sides of the football, to run over the Green Bay Packers, 26-11. That victory has put the 4-5 Chargers right back in the postseason talk, but all of that momentum will be lost if they lose on Thursday night.

Hosts Oakland are sitting just above them in the AFC West thanks to a 4-4 record, and they too go into this midweek matchup on the back on an important win over NFC North opposition. The Raiders had struggled since the bye week, dropping back-to-back games against Green Bay and Houston, but their response was an impressive one as they rode rookie running back Josh Jacobs to a crucial 31-24 victory that was secured when the defense managed to deny the Lions at 4th and one from Oakland’s one-yard line with just eight seconds to go. It may not have been pretty over the final two minutes, but there are no bonuses for style points and Oakland knew that if they lost for the third game running it would be a massive blow to their postseason aspirations. They showed nerves of steel to see it out, but all of that may count for nothing if they do not follow that up with another home win on Thursday night that would see them increase the lead they have over the third-placed Chargers in the West.

So as you can see, both the Chargers and the Raiders are going into this contest full of confidence thanks to their exploits against the NFC North, but who will continue to build momentum with a vital week 10 win and who’s postseason push will suffer a sizeable setback? Unsurprisingly the bookmakers believe this is a tough one to call – Los Angeles may be the odds-on favourites for Thursday Night Football but Oakland are by no means being ruled out, with several leading bookmakers going Even-money about them strengthening their grip on second place in the AFC West with a massive win here. That is no surprise considering star running back Jacobs should enjoy another highly-successful display against an underwhelming Chargers defense, but right now I cannot go against a Los Angeles team who are beginning to really click on offense.

Rivers has more weapons at his disposal than opposite number Carr, and he made the most of them last weekend as LA produced a season-best showing in total yards and rushing yards to down the Packers. Running back Melvin Gordon enjoyed his best outing of the season so far as appears to be getting back to his best after a late start, while quarterback Philip Rivers enjoyed an excellent day through the air against Green Bay, completing 21 of his 28 pass attempts for 294 yards. He could enjoy an even more productive day against this leaky Oakland secondary on Thursday night, and that will prove to be the difference as Los Angeles edge past their hosts and make it three-in-a-row.

This could also be the perfect opportunity for Keenan Allen to bounce back from a quiet day last Sunday. The Chargers wide receiver was targeted just four times by Rivers, hauling in three passes for 40 yards, but he should see plenty more looks against an Oakland secondary that ranks 29th in passing yards given up and 31st in touchdowns allowed. One of them could result in Allen finally ending a touchdown drought that now stands at six games.
