Commanders to cool down Hotshots? Get Alliance of American Football Week 8 tips

Leigh Copson 29 Mar 2019

Alliance of American Football predictions for Week 8 of the 2019 AAF season. Will the San Antonio Commanders end Arizona’s recent resurgence to take a giant stride towards the playoffs, and can the San Diego Fleet keep the pressure on their Western Conference rivals? Read on for all of our free predictions and betting tips.

How Is The Postseason Shaping Up?

The Orlando Apollos became the first team to book their place in the four-team playoffs as they bounced back from their first defeat of the season with a one-sided blowout of Atlanta last weekend. That victory, coupled with the Birmingham Iron’s shock loss to Memphis, means they will now finish in the top two spots in the Eastern Conference even if they lose their remaining three regular season games. Second place in the conference is still up for grabs, but Memphis and Atlanta have to win out to have any hope of overhauling the Iron, who are two games ahead of them both.

Things are a lot more competitive over in the Western Conference. While one more win should be enough to see the San Antonio Commanders into the postseason, the second playoff place is still up for grabs. The resurgent Arizona Hotshots currently sit second, but the San Diego Fleet are only one game behind them heading into Week 8 and the Salt Lake Stallions are not mathematically out of it.

Orlando Apollos at Memphis Express (Saturday 18:00 GMT)

Orlando’s response to their first loss of the inaugural – and perhaps only – Alliance of American Football season was an emphatic one as they rolled over the hapless Atlanta Legends for the second time in the space of seven weeks, and that victory was enough to secure a place in the playoffs. Top spot in the Eastern Conference is not wrapped up just yet though, so the Apollos will have plenty to play for against a Memphis Express team who came from behind to upset Birmingham to keep their slim postseason dream alive. Brandon Silvers put in a solid display at quarterback, with Johnny Manziel featuring on occasions, so Mike Singletary has a big decision to make when it comes to who will be at the controls of his offense on Saturday. It will not matter though. Orlando are a strong team on both sides of the football that can exploit every weakness the Express have – and they have plenty of them – so I expect a comfortable road win for the Apollos here.

San Diego Fleet at Salt Lake Stallions (Sunday 00:00 GMT)

This is a huge matchup for both Western Conference teams. The Salt Lake Stallions need a win to keep their season alive, while San Diego know that a victory will see them either move within a game of San Antonio or more level with Arizona. So as you can see, the stakes are high in this one, but neither team is in particularly good form heading into this one. Back-to-back defeats against Birmingham and Arizona have threatened to sink the Fleet’s season and their road record does not offer much in the way of confidence for this one – they are 0-3 outside of San Diego this season. Salt Lake, on the other hand, are 2-1 at home with their only defeat coming at the hands of an Orlando side that boast the best record in the entire league, and although they are 2-5 I feel like they are a better team than their record suggests. This could turn out to be a very close encounter, but given San Diego’s poor road form and Salt Lake’s decent home record, I find myself leaning towards the hosts.

Atlanta Legends at Birmingham Iron (Sunday 21:00 BST)

The Birmingham Iron raced out of the blocks as they won their first three games, defying pre-season predictions that they would turn out to be one of the worst teams in the league, but they have been unable to maintain that momentum and go into Sunday having lost three of their last four. Defeats to San Antonio and Orlando are hardly catastrophic results, but last weekend they suffered a late collapse that resulted in an overtime loss to a Memphis team that they shut out in Week 1, so the pressure is beginning to build on them. They desperately need a win in Week 8, and the good news is they could not have wished for a better matchup at this time. The Atlanta Legends showed some signs of life as they recorded back-to-back wins over Arizona and Memphis, but they have been brought crashing back down to Earth by heavy defeats at the hands of San Antonio and Orlando. Birmingham are not at the same level as those two clubs, but this Iron defense will have no problems shutting down that woeful Legends offense in order to lead the team to a much-needed ‘W’.

Arizona Hotshots at San Antonio Commanders (Monday 01:00 BST)

The Week 8 matchups do not come much bigger than this, because the outcome could have a massive impact on the postseason picture. A win for the Western Conference-leading San Antonio Commanders would pretty much wrap up top spot and secure a place in the postseason, while a victory for the Arizona Hotshots would see them move level with their hosts and set up a sprint between these two teams for the division honours. So who takes this one? Arizona have reignited their season with impressive wins over Orlando and San Diego, showing why the bookies made them favourites before the season began, and they have been solid on the road going 2-1. However, I still feel like San Antonio could be the most complete team on all sides of the football. They may not always blow teams away, but they know exactly how to grind things out and I have a hard time going against them in front of what will be a raucous Alamodome crowd. Arizona appear to have got themselves back on track, but San Antonio have won four straight games and they have already beaten the Hotshots in Arizona. Therefore I am backing the Commanders to come out on top here.
