Resurgent Hotshots shorten but bookies still backing Orlando for Alliance of American Football glory

Leigh Copson 26 Mar 2019

The Arizona Hotshots have breathed new life into their season with back-to-back victories, but the bookmakers are still backing the Orlando Apollos to win the inaugural Alliance of American Football Championship.

The Hotshots came into the AAF’s rookie season as the bookmakers’ pick to win it all, but their stock dropped dramatically when they suffered three straight defeats to slide down the standings in the Western Conference and that left them in desperate need of a victory when they visited then-unbeaten Orlando in Week 6.

Arizona got the win they needed when Jhurell Pressley scored what proved to be the game-winning touchdown with little over five minutes remaining, and they then built on that victory in Week 7 as they stormed to a dominant 32-15 victory over conference rivals San Diego to take control of second spot in the standings.

The Hotshots appear to be hitting a hot streak at the right time and, as a result, they are into +340 to win the championship with bookmaker bet365, but they remain behind an Orlando team that bounced back from their first defeat of the season to steamroll over the Atlanta Legends last weekend.

The Apollos became the first team to book a postseason berth as they ran out 36-6 winners in Atlanta, and the bookmakers responded to the Week 7 action by making them the +120 favourites to claim the crown.

The San Antonio Commanders are now as short as +350 after they won a nail-biter with Salt Lake to maintain top spot in the Western Conference, while the Birmingham Iron are now out at +500 after they suffered a shock defeat at the hands of a Memphis Express team they shut out in Week 1.

San Diego are right out at +1200 after they loss to Arizona took them out of the playoff places, while Memphis have come into +6600 after giving themselves the faintest glimmer of hope with that victory over Birmingham.

Atlanta are out to +8000 after being blown out by Orlando for the second time this season, and they are joined at that price by the Salt Lake Stallions, who are now two games off the pace in the Western Conference.
