Can anyone stop Orlando? Apollos shorten again after going 5-0

The Orlando Apollos are on a relentless march towards the first ever Alliance of American Football Championship, according the bookmakers.

The Apollos came into the new league’s rookie season as a leading contender and while others have failed to live up to pre-season expectations, Steve Spurrier’s men have certainly delivered on both sides of the football to rack up a perfect 5-0 record.

Last weekend was supposed to be their toughest challenge yet as they took on a Birmingham Iron team that may well boast the best defense in the Alliance, but quarterback Garrett Gilbert torched them through the air as he threw for 286 yards and a couple of scores, and on the ground running back De’Veon Smith was able to rack up 119 yards off 14 carries to average 8.5 yards per touch.

On the other side of the football the defense sacked the opposition QB five times and picked him off once, and all of this was good for an impressive 31-14 victory that has caused bookmaker bet365 to slash Orlando’s outright odds into +100 ahead of Week 6.

They will almost certainly become odds-on favourites after this weekend if they improve to 6-0, because they are taking on an Arizona Hotshots team that are fighting for their postseason lives after failing to live up to preseason expectations.

The bookies made Arizona the favourites for the AAF crown prior to the start of the season and they made a strong start by winning their first two games, but their Week 2 win over Memphis showed some worrying signs for fans and they were right to be worried because the Hotshots have blown cold and lost three straight since then.

That three-game losing run means they are now out to +500 alongside a Birmingham Iron team that have now lost two straight, while the San Diego Fleet have come into +550 after they improved to 3-2 by snatching a last-gasp win over Salt Lake last weekend.

The San Antonio Commanders’ odds have been slashed to +700 after they maintained top spot in the Western Conference with a 29-25 win in Arizona last time out, and there is quite the jump from there to the remaining three teams with Salt Lake and the Atlanta Legends now priced up at +2500, while the Memphis Express have hurtled out to +10000 after a huge mistake in the fourth quarter handed victory to the Legends in Week 5.
