St Louis Blues at Boston Bruins (01:00 BST on Tuesday) - Stanley Cup Finals Game 1

The Boston Bruins and St Louis Blues begin their Stanley Cup finals duel at the TD Garden on Monday night. This is the first meeting between the two teams in the best-of-seven championship series since 1970 when Phil Esposito and Bobby Orr led the Bruins to a sweep of the Blues. Orr scored the series-clinching goal 40 seconds into overtime of Game 4 and the image of him raising his arms while in mid-air after being tripped following the goal is one of the NHL’s most iconic photos. The only other post-season meeting between Boston and St Louis took place in 1972 with the Bruins sweeping their second-round duel. The Bruins are determined to continue their dominance over the Blues and leading the team in their quest for a seventh Stanley Cup are Brad Marchand, David Pastrnak and David Krejci. Marchand has 18 points in the play-offs and registered a goal and an assist in their 4-0 win over the Carolina Hurricanes last May 16 to sweep their Eastern Conference finals series. Boston, who earlier eliminated Toronto and Columbus, have won their last seven games. Head coach Bruce Cassidy will also count on Patrice Bergeron, Charlie Coyle, Torey Krug and goaltender Tuukka Rask as they aim to lift the oldest trophy in North American professional team sports for the first time since 2011. Standing between the Bruins and another Stanley Cup are the Blues, who are back in the championship series after a 49-year wait. They achieved the feat after beating the San Jose Sharks 5-1 at home on Tuesday to clinch their Western Conference finals battle four games to two. It was a remarkable feat for the franchise that had the worst record in the NHL on January 3. The Blues have never won the most coveted trophy in ice hockey so they are determined not to let their fans down this time. Leading St Louis in their historic quest is Jaden Schwartz, who has 12 goals and four assists in the play-offs. He is expected to get support from Ryan O'Reilly, Alex Pietrangelo, David Perron and Vladimir Tarasenko. Rookie goaltender Jordan Binnington is hoping to impress anew in the finals after playing well in their earlier series wins over Winnipeg, Dallas and San Jose. Coaching the Blues is Craig Berube, who was named interim mentor following Mike Yeo’s firing last November. The Bruins and Blues traded home wins in the regular season. We expect the Bruins to draw first blood in the series.
