Carolina Hurricanes at Boston Bruins (01:00 BST on Friday) - Eastern Conference Finals Game 1

The Boston Bruins and Carolina Hurricanes start their battle in the Eastern Conference finals. This is the third post-season duel between the two teams and first since 2009 when the Hurricanes won their conference semi-final series in seven games. Their only other play-offs meeting took place in 1999 with the Bruins winning their first-round series in six games. The Bruins needed six games to oust the Columbus Blue Jackets in the conference semi-finals while the Hurricanes swept the New York Islanders in their semi-final series. Brad Marchand, David Pastrnak and David Krejci will lead the Bruins in their quest to reach the Stanley Cup finals for the first time since 2013 when they lost to the Chicago Blackhawks in six games. Marchand has five goals and eight assists in the play-offs but he was less productive in their series against the Blue Jackets. Head coach Bruce Cassidy will also count on Patrice Bergeron, Charlie Coyle, Torey Krug and goaltender Tuukka Rask, who had 39 saves in Monday’s series-clinching 3-0 win over the Hurricanes. The Bruins won the last three meetings in the series after trailing 2-1. The bad news for Boston fans is defenceman Charlie McAvoy will not see action in Game 1 after he was slapped a one-game ban for making an illegal check on Columbus forward Josh Anderson in their last game. The Hurricanes, meanwhile, are aiming to reach the Stanley Cup finals for the first time since 2006 when now head coach Rod Brind'Amour led the Raleigh club to their only NHL crown. Leading Carolina in that quest are Jaccob Slavin, Teuvo Teravainen and Jordan Staal. Warren Foegele and Sebastian Aho are also out to impress for the Hurricanes, who have won their last six games. Ace goaltender Petr Mrazek is expected to return after sitting out their Game 3 and Game 4 wins over the Islanders with a lower-body injury. Back-up Curtis McElhinney started in his absence. The Bruins beat the Hurricanes twice in their three meetings in the regular season. We expect Boston to draw first blood in the series.
