The 2015/16 Champions Hockey League is its second season and will run from Thursday, August 20 until Tuesday, February 9 2016. Swedish side Lulea Hockey are the defending champions after beating fellow countrymen Frolunda HC 4-2 at the Coop Norrbotten Arena.

The Champions Hockey League has expanded for the 2015/16 season with 48 teams now divided into 16 groups consisting of three teams with the top two in each group advancing to the play-off round of 32.

The play-off rounds will see the games played over two-legs with the highest ranked team playing the second clash at home – all except the Final that is a one-off encounter with the home team the one with the best record in the competition.

The 48 teams competing in the Champions Hockey League feature 26 A Licenced clubs, 12 B Licenced clubs and 10 C Licenced wild-card teams – The wild-card teams are the champions from countries including Norway, Denmark, Slovakia, France and the UK plus two more teams from each of those countries.

Another wild-card licence for this season was awarded to the IIHF Continental Cup winner HK Grodno.

Luela Hockey were outstanding last season as they won the Champions Hockey Trophy and their goal is pretty plain and simple this year – they want to win it again.

Luela assistant captain Karl Fabricius said: “It was great to win the CHL in the spring and we want to do it again.
“It's fun to meet new teams with other game modes and systems and a different atmosphere to the matches. The tournament is in its infancy and I am confident that it will grow even more with time.”

What do the licenses mean?

A Licence - The 26 founding clubs are granted an "A licence", on the provision they play their domestic ice hockey in the first-tier league of their competition.

B Licence - The top regular season team and the top play-off team in the previous season without an A License. The rest of the B Licenced teams are sorted out by the following:

National champion
Regular season winner
Runner-up, regular season
Play-off finalist
Best placed semi-final loser
Worst placed semi-final loser

C Licence – The rest of the places will go to "wild-card" teams, from European first-tier leagues other than the founding ones.
