  • Kiel take 5 goal lead to Catalonia
  • Barcelona have overcome that deficit on 5 occasions in Champions League knock-out phase
  • Place at next month's prestigious FINAL4 tournament at stake

FC Barcelona Lassa will have to overcome a five goal deficit in the second leg of their EHF Champions League quarter-final tie with THW Kiel on Saturday evening if they are to book their place at the end of season FINAL4 tournament in Cologne next month.

The eight-time EHF Champions League winners and defending champions suffered a 29-24 defeat in last weekend's first leg in Germany as Kiel came out on top in the 20th meeting between these European powerhouses.

THW Kiel won't be taking anything for granted, though, as the Palau Blaugrana is a difficult place to go to at the best of times and they'll be only too aware that only two years ago Barca looked done and dusted at this stage of the competition after losing 31:38 but managed to turn things around in phenomenal fashion with a 31:24 victory to make it to Cologne thanks to the number of away goals scored.

"But still, we are not the favourites to proceed to the VELUX EHF FINAL4. Barca is Barca, especially when they play on home ground," insisted Kiel coach Alfred Gislason this week.

Impressively, Barcelona have turned a deficit of five or more goals into qualification for the next knock-out stage six times in the history of this competition.

If the visitors we're to fail to see this tie out, it would mean that the FINAL4 would take place for the first time without a German team and they'll be determined not to let that happen.

The last time Kiel failed to qualify for the FINAL4 was in 2011, when they were beaten twice by the Catalans, and even more worrying is the fact that this is the third time they face Barcelona in the quarter-finals – with both previous encounters ending in elimination.

Kiel did knock Barcelona out in the semi-finals in 2008, but that was achieved with a 10 goal advantage heading into the second leg in Catalonia.

The Germans can take confidence from the fact that before the first-leg, Barcelona had won all but two matches this season. The Catalans tasted defeat only once in all competitions thus far, losing at Rhein-Neckar Löwen in their Champions League opener before drawing at Kielce next time out.
