The Grand National is quite simply the biggest individual betting event of the year, and the one that tempts everybody to have an annual flutter.
When most people think about placing a bet, the first thing that enters their head tends to be the Grand National – and the easiest way to do it is with an online bookmaker.
Backing the winner of the Grand National is not easy, for even though the unique Aintree course is not as difficult as it used to be, the race is still something of a lottery – which, appropriately, was the name of the first ever winner way back in 1839.
Take a look at the 2013 edition for example. The world’s greatest steeplechase was won by a 66/1 outsider, Auroras Encore, who had not shown any proper form for nearly 12 months and was partnered by a jockey in Ryan Mania having his first ride in the race.
But if you looked back far enough at his past accomplishments, Auroras Encore could have been given a chance – and those that backed him would have won big money. A £5 each way bet on Auroras Encore at the starting price of 66/1 would have returned £422.50.
Many people like each-way bets on the Grand National
You have the opportunity to bet either win or each-way on the Grand National and when you visit an online bookmaker, they will often give you more favourable place terms than if you had visited one of their shops.
For example, in the 2013 Grand National some firms were paying out on the first six places whereas shop customers would get just four.
And those who bet on the Grand National online can help themselves to bigger odds than the starting price. Most bookmakers offer Best Odds Guaranteed, which means if you take a price before the race and your horse drifts out to a bigger S.P. you will still be paid out at the greater odds.
When you have placed your bet, you will usually then have the chance to watch the race at that bookmaker’s website via their live streaming service.
The Grand National coverage always starts early!
But we don’t just limit our Grand National coverage to that one week in early April.
If you enjoy betting on the Grand National you have come to the right place, for our coverage starts from the moment the first key trials are run several months before, earmarking which horses are worth considering for an ante-post bet and likely to be among the leading contenders come the big day.
When the Grand National weights are revealed in February we will tell you which horses look to have been given the best chance by the handicapper.
And don’t forget, several bookmakers will run money-back special offers on the Grand National which means there is the chance to get your stake refunded if you miss out on backing the winner.
