Bettingpro.com's Jon Wilde provides outright betting tips for the 2018 Valspar Championship and a guide on how to bet on this PGA Tour event from March 8-11.

Background to the Valspar Championship

The Valspar Championship was inaugurated in 2000 as the Tampa Bay Classic and has taken place in what has become its customary early March slot on the Florida Swing of the PGA Tour calendar since 2007.

It has also been known as the Chrysler Championship, PODS Championship and Transitions Championship, but paint manufacturer Valspar took over in 2014 and have a sponsorship deal in place until 2020.

Two players have won the event twice, namely K J Choi and Retief Goosen with the latter in the field again this time, while Canada’s Adam Hadwin is the defending champion.

Three from the tee

Here are the trio we are backing for the 2018 Valspar Championship:

1) MATT KUCHAR @ 50/1 with Boylesports (paying 1/5 odds first 7 places for each-way bets)

Although it’s getting on for four years since Kuchar last tasted success on the PGA Tour, this is a week when he could end his victory famine on a course he freely admits is among his favourites on the circuit.

The 39-year-old has never gone that close to winning at Innisbrook, but he has missed only one cut in his 10 visits and a fifth place at the Phoenix Open last month confirmed his game is in decent shape.

2) HENRIK STENSON @ 22/1 with SportingBet (paying 1/4 odds first 5 places for each-way bets)

Of those at or near the top of the market, Stenson is the one we like best this week having never finished worse than 11th in his three appearances at this tournament.

The Swede has an excellent record in Florida generally and although he comes here after a few weeks off, he has shown before that he can hit the ground running with a high finish on his return to action following a break.

3) BRYSON DeCHAMBEAU @ 100/1 with Unibet (paying 1/5 odds first 6 places for each-way bets)

You may know this player best from his appearance in the Microsoft TV advert, but he has plenty of game and was right in the mix here last year until a cold putter in the final round let him down.

Since then, he has won the John Deere Classic which is a useful guide course-wise to this event and his recent form has suggested he can go close here having rewarded his each-way backers only three starts ago.

Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club in Palm Harbor, just west of Tampa, is the venue for the Valspar Championship and of the four courses at this complex, the Copperhead Course is the one on which the tournament is played.

The Copperhead Course, which was opened in 1974, measures 7,340 yards and is a par-71 with two long holes on each nine, including the 560-yard first, a dogleg right where three shots are usually needed to reach the green.

The fairways are tree-lined and the surrounding lakes and ponds home to abundant wildlife, including alligators which have occasionally been sighted during the tournament!

Valspar Championship in-play betting tactics

Unlike many tournaments, this is one where it is possible to come from well off the pace as Charl Schwartzel did in 2016 when he trailed by five shots going into the final round.

Jordan Spieth was also a big price in-running three years ago while of other winners in the table above, John Senden, Kevin Streelman, Luke Donald and Mark Calcavecchia also overcame big deficits at the halfway stage.

Plenty of ground can clearly be made up at the weekend, so do not be afraid to back an outsider or two at big prices on, say, Saturday morning.

Similarly, there have been a couple of examples in the last few years of big leads being blown late on, so someone who has set a challenging clubhouse target on Sunday may well be worth siding with while the last groups are negotiating the closing stretch.

Valspar Championship markets

Bookmakers are offering a good range of markets on this tournament including the staples of Winner, Top 5, Top 10 and Top 20 Finish, plus First Round Leader.

Those happy to bet on a single nationality or continent of player can choose from 10 such markets including Top Australian, Top GB and Ireland and Top South African. These can be a good way to bet if you fancy a certain player to go well, or at least better than his compatriots, but not necessarily feature right at the top of the leaderboard.

There are also several special bets on offer including whether there will be a play-off or a hole in one, as well as the margin of victory.
