Dustin Johnson is into 5/1 to win the USPGA Championship after shooting a three-under-par opening round that has him just three shots of the lead heading into day two.

Johnson made a blistering start to the day as he reeled off three straight birdies between 11 and 13, but his momentum was halted by a bogey at the par-four 14th and he then dropped further shots at the par-five 17th and par-four fourth as his USPGA Championship quest threatened to go off the rails.

The 34-year-old American responded in spectacular fashion though, and he embarked on another streak of birdies between six and eight to storm back into contention at three-under, and that has resulted in bookmaker bet365 trimming his outright odds into 5/1.

Rickie Fowler is now into 13/2, making him the second favourite, after he opened up with a five-under-par round that puts him just one shot off the lead as the players prepare to head back out onto the Bellerive Country Club course today.

Fowler has never got his hands on one of golf’s Majors before, going closest in 2014 when he finished second at the US Open and Open Championships while placing third at the USPGA Championship, but a strong first showing on Thursday saw him rack up six birdies and a single bogey to shoot 65, and it has resulted in the bookies trimming the American’s odds.

Jason Day is now 10/1 after he battled the emotional strain over the death of compatriot Jarrod Lyle to shoot a first-round 67, while Gary Woodland is now a 14/1 contender after he overcame a first-hole bogey to end the day six-under and take a one-shot lead into day two in St Louis.

Brandon Stone and Zack Johnson are 66/1 and 30/1 respectively after they opened their campaigns with four-under rounds that have them sharing third place heading into the second round, while Justin Rose is currently 14/1 after ending the day amongst a group of players on three-under that includes Ian Poulter (45/1) and Open Championship runner-up Kevin Kisner (55/1).

Rory McIlroy has plummeted down to 25/1 after he cancelled out a couple of birdies on the back nine to end the day on Even-par, while Tiger Woods is now out at 66/1 after a back-nine collapse saw him shoot two bogeys and a double-bogey to end the day alongside McIlroy.
