US PGA Championship 2017 betting tips: 3 from the tee at Quail Hollow

Tony Finau (credit: Getty Images)'s Jon Wilde provides outright betting tips for the 2017 US PGA Championship and a guide on how to bet on the season’s final Major at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, North Carolina from August 10-13.

Background to the US PGA Championship

The fourth and last Major of the year and probably the least prestigious of the quartet, the US PGA Championship nevertheless has arguably the greatest strength in depth.

The reason is that the vast majority of the world’s top 100 will be among the field of 156 players, for unlike the Open Championship and the US Open there is no qualifying process for the tour professionals – they have to meet certain criteria to earn their place.

But that criteria lends itself to the best players being involved, while 20 places are reserved for American club professionals who qualify via a tournament that is restricted to them.

Founded in 1916, this will be the 99th US PGA Championship as it was not held three times due to the two World Wars and, like the US Open, it changes venue every year.

Jack Nicklaus and Walter Hagen are the most frequent winners with five each, followed by Tiger Woods on four, while of this year’s participants Rory McIlroy and Vijay Singh have triumphed twice each. Jimmy Walker is the defending champion.

Three from the tee

Here are the trio we are backing at a variety of prices for the 2017 US PGA Championship:

1) TONY FINAU @ 100/1 with 188BET (win only); 80/1 with Stan James (paying 1/5 odds first 8 places for each-way bets)

We are siding with a trio of young Americans to capture the glory at Quail Hollow and will start with Finau, whom regular readers will know we have tipped several times this year – gaining a payout last time when he was fifth at the Canadian Open.

The 27-year-old from Salt Lake City has twice finished in the top 30 at the Wells Fargo Championship on this course, is playing consistently well this season and the next step for him is to contend in a Major – this could be the week.

2) DANIEL BERGER @ 66/1 with 188BET (win only); 60/1 with Paddy Power (paying 1/5 odds first 8 places for each-way bets)

From the same 2014 Tour alumni as Finau, Berger has progressed the more quickly of this talented pair and is into the world’s top 20 after winning the St Jude Classic in June while he has also shown up prominently in the Majors.

Most of the recent US PGA champions had won previously in the same season and also played well at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational a week earlier – and Berger also ticks both of those important boxes.

3) JORDAN SPIETH @ 10/1 with BetFred (paying 1/4 odds first 6 places for each-way bets)

Jordan Spieth (Getty Images)

We also need to have one of the favourites running for us and after considering all of the top six in the betting, it’s Spieth who gets the vote ahead of Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson.

The Open champion’s continued excellent form is the main reason and he is a player that has proved he is capable of stringing together high finishes in Majors, winning back-to-back in 2015 – while history shows the Open-US PGA double is generally the easiest one to achieve.

Course Guide

Quail Hollow is usually the venue for the Wells Fargo Championship which takes place on the PGA Tour in May, but that event was switched elsewhere this year due to the US PGA’s impending arrival.

It is a private members’ club that opened in 1961 and underwent a series of improvements in 1986, including the modification of four holes under the design of Arnold Palmer. Further renovations took place in 1997 and 2003 when the Wells Fargo Championship was moved there.

Also set to stage the Presidents Cup in 2021, Quail Hollow is a par-72 course measuring 7,442 yards and the course record of 61 was set by Rory McIlroy in 2015.

US PGA Championship markets

The bookmakers have pushed the boat out more than usual on their range of markets for the US PGA Championship with around 50 at the time of writing - and possibly more to come - to choose from across the different operators.

There are the usual staples relating to a golfer's finishing position - Outright Winner, Top 5, Top 10 and Top 20, while Top 6 and Top 8 have also been added into the mix for this event. First Round Leader, Winning Nationality and Will There Be A Play-Off? are also regular options for the weekly tour events.

But the Majors tend to throw up some more quirky and appealing options, with the geographical markets divided into 21 different categories this time including Top Asian, Top Englishman and Top Scandinavian.

Plus, you can also bet on other specific criteria such as Top Former Winner, Top Left-Hander and Top Senior, while you can also back certain players to either make or miss the cut.

If you would rather place a bet that is not specific player performance-related, there are markets for whether a hole-in-one, multiple ‘aces’ or an albatross will be recorded!
