Tiger Woods 25/1 to end Major drought after admitting The Open offers his best chance

Tiger Woods believes this week’s Open Championship at Carnoustie is his best chance he has had to end his Major drought for quite some time.

A 14-time Major winner and three-time Open champion, Woods has not won one of golf’s biggest tournaments since his US Open success back in 2008, but he believes the Carnoustie course and the weather conditions are the ideal recipe for him to finally end that drought this week.

“You don't have to be long to play on a links golf course – just look at what Tom Watson did at Turnberry at the age of 59,” said Woods. “Greg Norman was up there at Birkdale the year before and he was mid-50s, so it certainly can be done.

“You get to places like Augusta National, where's it's just a big ballpark, and the golf course outgrows you, unfortunately. But you can roll the ball on a links course, so distance becomes a moot point. Creativity plays such an important role as well. There's a reason why Tom won five of these – he is very creative and hit all the shots you need.

“I'm just really looking forward to the week. This is our oldest championship, and to come back to such a historic site just brings back so many great memories. The course might be a little different to what it was the last couple of times we played it, so it will be a fun challenge.”

Bookmaker bet365 is not ruling out Woods’ chances of lifting the Claret Jug for the fourth time on Sunday evening, but at 25/1 there are several men ahead of the former world number one in the outright betting at this time.

Dustin Johnson remains the bookmakers’ favourite to win the 2018 Open Championship at Carnoustie, with Justin Rose considered his biggest threat at 16/1 ahead of Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler, who have each been priced up at 18/1.

Jordan Spieth and Jon Rahm are next up at 20/1, with US Open champion Brooks Koepka next up at 22/1 alongside Tommy Fleetwood, who came agonisingly close to winning his first Major title when he shot a record-equalling final round at last months’ US Open, only to fall one shot shy of forcing a play-off.
