Shane Lowry’s Open success forces bookies into historic monster pay-out

Shane Lowry’s sensational success at The Open cost the betting industry over €10million, and bookmaker Paddy Power has confirmed that it is one of the biggest pay-outs in the history of the game.

The Offaly native, who is a Paddy Power golf ambassador, was available at odds as large as 50/1 earlier this week before the tournament got underway.

But by the time the Clara man took his first tee-shot on Sunday morning, he held a four-shot lead and was odds-on at 1/2 to take the Claret Jug home to the midlands.

“Lowry had the entire nation willing him to win, us included,” a Paddy Power spokesperson told Bettingpro.com.

“It’s cost us a fortune, but to see the expression on his face was priceless – and pretty much the opposite to that of the Paddy Power finance department on Sunday night.”

The bookmaker said patriotic punters had piled on the 32-year-old to pull it off, while one customer in particular doubled down on their support of Irish sportsmen, backing Lowry at 50/1 and Ireland to win the Rugby World Cup, meaning they could win a five-figure sum should Joe Schmidt’s green army hit the jackpot in Japan.
