Team Europe gamble tees up big loss for bookies

Ben Darvill 26 Sep 2018

Ryder Cup hosts cut to 5/4 from 11/8 ahead of Friday’s opening fourballs.

With less than 48 hours to go until golfers take to the first tee for the hotly-anticipated 2018 Ryder Cup, punters are piling into outsiders Team Europe and bookmaker Betway have had to cut the odds of a home victory to 5/4 from 11/8.

The leading online bookie is fearing an 11th victory for Thomas Bjorn’s men with customers throwing their weight behind Team Europe ahead of the start of proceedings on Friday.

Team USA are having a wobble in the betting, drifting out to 5/6 from 4/5, but remain favourites for the competition with the likes of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson and Jordan Spieth all lining up.

“Europe’s underdog tag hasn’t perturbed punters and Thomas Bjorn’s side are all the rage ahead of the opening day of the Ryder Cup on Friday,” Alan Alger of Betway told Bettingpro.

“America have six of the top 10 in the world, as well as the resurgent Tiger Woods, but all the recent money has been for Europe, who are 5/4 from 11/8 to secure their 11th victory in Paris.

“Jim Furyk’s team are still the favourites to win the trophy, though they are on the drift with the current holders 5/6 from 4/5.”
