Pre-tournament favourite Dustin Johnson plummets to 150/1 after nightmare first day at The Open

Dustin Johnson has gone from 12/1 Open Championship favourite to 150/1 write-off after a day to forget at Carnoustie.

The Open has not been a particularly happy hunting ground for Johnson in recent years, but the American was fancied to exorcise those demons in 2018 thanks to strong showings in the first two Major tournaments of the year which saw him follow up a 10th-place finish at The Masters with a third-place showing at the US Open last month.

The former world number one started his quest for the Claret Jug in mediocre fashion front nine as he dropped a shot at the eighth, and his struggles continued after the turn when he sandwiched a birdie on the 14th with bogeys on 12 and 16.

The final two holes offered him an opportunity to limit the damage caused but instead he managed to make things worse, going out of bounds with his second shot on 18 before three-putting on the green to complete a five-over round.

That terrible first day has resulted in Johnson plummeting down the outright betting to 150/1* with bet365, and the 35-year-old American will be fighting just to make the cut when he tees off his second round on Friday morning.

Johnson’s opening-day struggles have resulted in Rory McIlroy becoming the new favourite at 10/1 after he overcame a bogey at the fifth to complete a two-under 69, but there are plenty of men hot on the Northern Irishman’s heels in the betting with Jon Rahm and Justin Thomas at 11/1 and 14/1 respectively after they shot two-under, while Rickie Fowler is 16/1 after an opening-day 70.

Kevin Kisner is the surprise leader after a show-stealing first day at Carnoustie that saw him eagle the sixth and reel off three straight birdies between 13 and 15 on his way to a five-under-par 66 that has put him one shot clear of Erik van Rooyen, Tony Finau and Zander Lombard.

As a result Kisner’s odds have been slashed to 25/1, with Finau ahead of him in the betting at 16/1 while van Rooyen and Lombard are 50/1 and 125/1 respectively.

And of course, there were plenty of eyes on Tiger Woods as he began his quest to finally bring an end to his Major drought in Scotland.

The 14-time Major winner began the tournament as a 25/1 dark horse to lift the Claret Jug for the fourth time in his career, and having shortened to 14/1 at one stage on Thursday, Woods ended the first day back at 25s after a back-nine stumble forced him to settle for an even-par round.
