Nigel Seeley's three from the tee for the Farmers Insurance Open

Bettingpro Staff 22 Jan 2019

Read on for our expert tips for the upcoming Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines Golf Course.

Farmers Insurance Open

TIGER WOODS makes his seasonal debut this week at the Farmers Insurance Open and the seven-time champion of this event will certainly have his supporters at 16/1.

Not only has Tiger won at Torrey Pines seven-times at the Farmers', he also claimed his last major success here at the 2008 US Open and you are going to have to be a brave or stupid person to oppose him this week and seeing as I am both.. here is who I think can topple the Tiger.

Defending champion Jon Rahm is in good form with no worse than a eighth finish in his last four events but despite winning the Hero World Challenge in some style, the Spaniard doesn't win enough for me and is always in contention but never seems to convert and at just 10/1 in a stellar field which is assembled this week, that is too short.

Jason Day and Justin Rose are next in the betting both at 14/1 and Day also has a fantastic recent record at this event winning it twice and a runner-up in the last five years and with Rose eighth and fourth in the last two years, both will be towards the top of the leaderboard but neither have made my final three.

Mark Leishman @ 20/1 with bet365

MY main selection this week is MARK LEISHMAN who looks a great bet at the 20/1 with Bet365. There is no better player in the World at present than the Aussie who has gone second, fourth and third in his last three starts.

He started the new season with a win at the CIMB Classic and he also partnered countryman Cameron Smith to a runners-up spot in the World Cup of Golf in November and with course credentials to match his current form he's the main man to spoil Tigers' return.

Last year Leishman finished in fourth spot which was his fourth top 10 finish at this event and with two runner-up spots he is in the form of his life to go one better this week.

Tony Finau @ 20/1 with Paddy Power

TONY FINAU is the most consistent performer in World golf and the man who almost won the FedEx Cup last year without winning a tournament will give you another decent run for your money again also at 20/1.

Finau, like Tiger will be making his 2019 debut at Torrey Pine and he has been paired against Woods in the opening round and where that usually is a daunting thought for most, I can't see it phasing the cool as ice Finau.

He's played this event four times and has never failed to make the top 25 and he keeps moving in the right direction year on year after a fourth finish in 2018 and a sixth spot in 2017.

Charles Howell @ 33/1 with Betfair

MY final selection is CHARLES HOWELL who is always somebody to keep on your side at the start of every golf season.

Howell III has an amazing record in the early part of every year and he showed that by winning the RSM Classic in November.

Torrey Pines is a venue where the evergreen 39 year-old has never missed the cut in his 16 previous starts and has been runner-up at this event no less than three times and has made the top 10 on six occasions, including last years sixth finish.

His early season form is solid as to be expected with four top 10 finishes in eight starts and last week at the Desert Classic he led the greens in regulation despite ending the event in 34th spot and at 33/1 he completes the list of contenders this week.
