Arnold Palmer Invitational

The PGA Tour this week moves to a familiar stop with the Arnold Palmer Invitational which will be hosted for the 41st year from the spectacular Bay Hill Golf Club and Lodge.

This is one of the longest and most established events on the PGA calendar and a top quality field is assembled in Orlando for what promises to be four days of fantastic golf. The tournament was dealt a blow earlier in the week after the withdrawal of multiple winner Tiger Woods, but with defending champion Rory McIlroy, World number one Justin Rose and Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau leading the home challenge Tiger's loss won't be felt too much.

Rory, is a worthy favourite to successfully defend his title especially after his return to form with a runners-up spot in Mexico a fortnight ago, but odds of 7/1 looks very short for a player who hasn't won since his success last year, despite his course credentials (closing with a brilliant 64 to win last year) and his solid form on the US Tour this season, he for me is still one to overlook at the odds.

Rose is next in the betting at 11/1 and with a third last year and no worse than a 13th finish in his last three starts the always reliable Englishman will certainly be in the mix, but a missed cut in his last start in Saudi Arabia and a few weeks off is a concern and like McIlory he does very little for me at the prices.

Three From The Tee

My headline selection this week is 2017 champion MARC LEISHMAN who looks massive value at the general 25/1 on offer with most bookmakers.

Leishman not only won at Bay Hill two years ago, he also boasts two top 10 finishes and a couple of top 20s as well in his nine previous starts at this event.

The Australian is a proven performer and should be considered amongst the top five in the betting lists after a great start to 2019 after finishing inside the top five in five of his nine tournaments worldwide.

Two things you have to look for in a golf winner is current form and previous course form and the Aussie has two big ticks next to both of those and in his last 12 rounds at Bay Hill he's a course average of 69.75 , which will certainly see him challenging at the top of the leaderboard yet again.

Francesco Molinari @ 35/1 bet365

McIlory and Rose head the European challenge in the eyes of the bookmakers this week but Europe's number one golfer FRANCESCO MOLINARI has been overlooked by the layers and 35/1 on the European order of merit winner with bet365 looks a very big price.

After the heroics of last season and the Ryder Cup win Molinari has had a quiet start to 2019 but he showed signs of his best form a couple of weeks back at Chapultepec with a 17th finish where he topped the scoring charts in the par 3 scoring.

Molinari's record at Bay Hill is very impressive with three top 10 finishes in six visits and no worse than 26th (last year) when he fell away in the final round. The Italian's performances in Paris in the Ryder Cup is still fresh in golf punters minds and the 36 year-old will relish another opportunity to take on the American's at his favourite venue on the PGA Tour.

Lucas Glover @ 50/1 bet365

Another Ryder Cup star Henrik Stenson was very close to making the final three, but his current form is poor and he just fell away, but it's worth keeping an eye on the Swede for in-running betting as his form at this event is the best in the field and although he hasn't won it, he's finished inside the places five times in the last six years and if he gets off to a good start he is certainly one to keep an eye on.

The man who did get the final spot was LUCAS GLOVER at the general 50/1.

Glover had another great week at the Honda Classic finishing in a tie for fourth, just two shots of the eventual winner Keith Mitchell. That was Glover's seventh top 20 finish of the new season and what has impressed me in recent weeks and in the closing holes last week was his short game , making some very impressive putts down the stretch and with solid form at the Arnold Palmer including a seventh finish in 2017 at 50/1 he's a nice each-way bet.
