Europe out to 15/8 from 6/5 ahead of afternoon foursomes

Europe out to 15/8 from 6/5 ahead of afternoon foursomes.

The United States enjoyed an exceptionally impressive start to the Ryder Cup as they took a commanding 3-1 lead after the morning fourballs, with Europe already hitting a rocky patch. Dustin Johnson and Rickie Fowler easily beat an out-of-sort Rory McIlroy and Thorbjorn Olsesn 4&2, with Justin Rose and John Rahm seeing Brooks Koepka and Tony Finau come from behind to snatch a point. Francesco Molinari and Tommy Fleetwood got Europe on the board, but this came in conjunction with Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth taking the point for the USA.

While it was a tough beginning to the competition, fortunately for the Europe, their start was not as woeful as when they went 4-0 down two years ago at Hazeltine, with that opening seeing them unable to wrestle the initiative back from their counterparts. This start has seen Europe drift in the betting, with Betway now pricing them at 15/8 to win the competition.

“The Ryder Cup scoreboard has plenty of red on it heading into the afternoon session and USA are now just 4/7 to retain the Ryder Cup,” Alan Alger of Betway told Bettingpro.

“It’s only a two-point lead with plenty of golf to be played, so Europe’s current price of 15/8 may be worth snapping up if you think Thomas Bjorn’s foursomes can close the gap later today.

“Poulter and McIlroy are our big fancy to get Europe a point this afternoon at just 5/6, while Americans Spieth and Thomas are the shortest price to add another point to the USA tally at 10/11.”
