BMW Championship 2017 betting tips: 3 from the tee at Conway Farms

Justin Rose (credit: Getty Images)'s Jon Wilde provides outright betting tips for the 2017 BMW Championship and a guide on how to bet on the third of four events in the PGA Tour FedEx Cup play-offs at Conway Farms, Illinois, from September 14-17.

The BMW Championship was formerly known as the Western Open and in that guise, it dated all the way back to 1899 when it was first played in the village of Golf, Illinois.

In 2007, it was reinvented as the BMW Championship and switched from its traditional early July date to September, becoming the third of the four tournaments that comprise the FedEx Cup play-offs, with the eventual winner of that lucrative series collecting a $10million bonus.

After the top 100 players in the points standings since the start of the season last October were eligible to contest the previous play-off event, the Dell Technologies Championship two weeks ago, the first 70 on the updated list have gone forward to this tournament, after which the field will be whittled down again to the last 30 who contest the decisive Tour Championship.

While Tiger Woods has won the Western Open and BMW Championship combined a total of five times, defending champion Dustin Johnson is the only other player to have captured this title more than once since it was rebranded.

Three from the tee

Here are the trio we are backing for the 2017 BMW Championship:

1) JUSTIN ROSE @ 33/1 with BetBright (paying 1/4 odds first 5 places for each-way bets)

Although it was at a different venue, Rose is a former winner of the BMW Championship and the return to just outside of Chicago should suit the Englishman who played well when this tournament was last held at Conway Farms two years ago.

This has not been a vintage season for the reigning Olympic champion, who unusually has yet to record a victory, but he has finished in the top 10 in the last two play-off events and he looks a big price at 'double carpet' with his form clearly improving from where it was in high summer.

2) JORDAN SPIETH @ 13/2 with SportingBet

The way this golf season has panned out, with a handful of players seemingly dominating the top events, it means you need to have one of them on your side and Spieth is who we will choose.

The Open champion is maintaining an extremely high level of form having been just touched off in the two previous play-off events and there appears to be no reason why he will not contend again here.

3) ADAM HADWIN @ 150/1 with Boylesports (paying 1/5 odds first 6 places for each-way bets)

Hadwin can look forward to his Presidents Cup debut in a couple of weeks and the Canadian has enjoyed a really solid year, winning his first PGA Tour event and enjoying high finishes at top-quality events such as the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.

The Canadian has no pressure this week because he is guaranteed to be in the top 30 who will contest the Tour Championship and he simply looks over-priced here given his 2017 accomplishments.

Course Guide

Conway Farms has staged the BMW Championship in alternate, odd-numbered years since 2013 and is a private golf club in the city of Lake Forest, part of the Chicago metropolitan area along the shore of Lake Michigan.

It was opened in the summer of 1991 and is a par-71 course measuring 7,233 yards from the championship tees, with its official website revealing it was “designed around the tradition of Scottish links golf”.

Low scoring is very achievable and former world No 1 and club member Luke Donald held the course record of 61 for five years until Jim Furyk, during the 2013 BMW Championship, carded the magical figure of 59 on day two of the tournament, although he eventually finished third.

BMW Championship in-play betting tactics

This is only the third time this tournament has visited Conway Farms and on the two previous occasions, the eventual winner was up with the pace throughout. A fast start is therefore useful but it’s a very small sample size we are relying on.

What may be of more relevance is the layout of the course, which offers a finish where it is distinctly possible to make up ground.

Among the last five holes there are a very birdieable par-five, a drivable par-four and finally another par-five which is essentially a lay-up but still produces lots of gains. Expect plenty of excitement over these holes on Sunday.

BMW Championship markets

The bookmakers are offering a good range of markets on this tournament including the staples of Winner, Top 5, Top 10 and Top 20 Finish, plus First Round Leader.

Those happy to wager on a single nationality or continent of player can choose from 12 such markets including Top Canadian, Top GB and Ireland and Top Spaniard. These markets can be a good option if you fancy a certain player to go well but not necessarily feature right at the top of the leaderboard.

There are also several special bets on offer including whether there will be a play-off, a hole in one, an albatross, a wire-to-wire winner (same player to lead after every round), the margin of victory and whether or not the eventual champion will play in the final group on the last day.
