Nigel Seeley's three from the tee for the Australia PGA Championships

Bettingpro Staff 27 Nov 2018

BettingPro's new expert Nigel Seeley offers his three best bets for the Australia PGA Championship.

The Australia PGA Championships

THE European Tour offering this week is the Australia PGA Championships which are being held at the beautiful Gold Coast in Queensland.

This is a very open field and although Mark Leishman and defending champion Cameron Smith are the best two players in the event, I really don't believe that either of them are any value at 5/1 and 6/1 respectively.

Smith won this event last year, at a different venue and both Smith and Leishman represented Australia at last week's World Cup and the pressures of being the tournament favourite in their own country let them down last week and with that mantle on them again, and in Smith's case defending a title for the first time in his career both can be avoided.

Three From The Tee

1) Harold Varner @ 9/1 with Ladbrokes

MY main selection is American HAROLD VARNER III at the general 9/1 available with most bookies.

Varner III is the man in form in this field after some solid performances on the PGA Tour over the last few months.

The 28 year old has had four top 20 finishes in his five starts to the new season and last year at this event, although it was at a different venue , he finished in sixth position to show that he can play in the Australian conditions.

2) Lucas Herbert @ 20/1 with bet365

Two Australian's head the betting but they could easily be upstaged this week by another very talented Aussie in LUCAS HERBERT who is 20/1 with bet365.

The 23 year-old is going to be a major golf star and his form in the last few months is very impressive to say the least.

At the Portugal Masters in September he finished in runners-up spot and then a seventh place at the Dunhill Links and he followed that up a week later with a third place finish at the British Open.

In the last couple of tournaments his form has dropped with 35/35/49 finishes in November, but in a low key field like this Herbert could break through with his maiden tour win.

3) Wade Ormsby @ 33/1 with William Hill

Another who could lead the home charge is WADE ORMSBY who looks big at the general 33/1 and also looks a decent bet in the top Australian market.

Ormsby has won on the European Tour and finished 10th at this event last year and in recent weeks he's put in some decent showings at tournaments that have a lot more quality in what he finds himself amongst this week.

At the Nedbank earlier in the month he finished in 16th spot closing with a 67 and in the last two weeks he's done OK in Hong Kong and Dubai and back on home soil I am expecting a decent showing.
